About AGRIS was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1974, to facilitate information exchange and to bring together world literature dealing with all aspects of agriculture. The database contains bibliographic material about all technical, economic and sociological aspects of agriculture, including forestry, animal husbandry, the aquatic sciences and fisheries, and human nutrition. AGRIS is compiled from data submitted by 240 national AGRIS centers and international organizations. The strength of AGRIS lays in the fact that non-conventional material (the so called 'grey literature') constitutes about 20% of the database. This material comprises scientific and technical reports, theses, conference papers, etc. This material is not covered by other databases. Geographical coverage is international with emphasis on developing countries. About one third of the database refers to non-English documents. Disadvantages of AGRIS are that the database often lags behind, and that some materials are sometimes difficult to obtain.
