Abstract The rivers Rhine and Meuse fulfill important functions in the water supply of The Netherlands. Global climate change may affect the hydrological behaviour of these rivers and consequently the availability of water for a variety of purposes. The possible effects of global climate change on the discharge regime of the river Rhine system has been studied extensively during recent years. The Meuse, however, has received significantly less attention.
