Abstract Potatoes are usually grown on ridges, in which water and nutrients will move not only vertically but also horizontally owing to the formation of the ridge and the spatial variation of root distribution. A two-dimensional model for soil water movement was used to simulate water transport within a ridge for a crop with an irregular root distribution. Additional modules were attached describing nutrient transport as well as water and nutrient uptake. Data from literature were used to demonstrate the various possibilities of this model.
