The Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) in Mlingano, Tanzania made a start with GIS activities at the end of 1998. After purchasing GIS hardware and software and basic training courses, Alterra was invited to carry out a consultancy mission to solvepractical problems with map projection, map production and data transfer. To create an optimal geo-information structure at ARI, it is important to organize and structure the facilities and to practise the software. Besides, a strategy has to be developed on how to use GIS within the research programmes. Together with the University College of Lands and Architectural Studies (UCLAS), ARI will organize a workshop for the leading Tanzanian GIS users to consider the possibilities and advantages of a Tanzanian GIS user group.
