Abstract This paper focuses on traceability and certification. The goal of the paper is to analyse the status and perspectives of traceability systems and certification schemes and to review their potential costs and benefits. The following two sections describe purposes, requirements, status and perspectives of traceability systems and certification schemes, respectively. Then there is a section discussing potential costs and benefits, followed by a comprising section with the conclusions and an economic research agenda for the field of traceability and certification in livestock production chains
