Abstract Pectins or pectic substances are names of a group of closely associated polysaccharides present in plant cell walls. Due to their anionic nature, pectic polysaccharides are considered to be involved in the regulation of ion transport and may control the permeability of the walls for enzymes. Also they determine the water-holding capacity of the wall
