Abstract To describe the influence of environmental components on the prevalence of insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH), data on 6108 Shetland and Friesian mares was used. The prevalence of IBH varied from 0 to 71.4% per region. Results showed that high rainfall, many cold days and few warm days decreased the prevalence of IBH. Habitats that decreased the prevalence of IBH were based along the coast line. Habitats increasing the prevalence of IBH contained clayey soils with heather and woody vegetation. Heritabilities for IBH prevalence were estimated to be 0.081 for Shetland and 0.096 for Friesian mares. The low heritabilities suggest that environmental factors within region play an important role
