With effect from 2012, the traditional cages for laying hens will be forbidden in the EU and replaced by enriched cages or alternative systems, such as barn housing. This study describes the consequences if the Netherlands decides not to permit housing in enriched cages. A prohibition has immediate consequences for animal welfare, the environmental impact, the market for eggs and egg products at home and abroad and the competitive position and incomes of all holdings in the laying poultry complex.
