Abstract The article discusses the environmental impact of a commercial fishing method, called trawling, on marine ecosystems. Topics include environmentalists' argument that trawling destroys fish stocks and creates a marine desert, a study by Daniel van Denderen of the Wageningen Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies in the Netherlands that suggests trawling increases fish stocks, and conservationists' skepticism of van Denderen's study.
