Abstract There is strong evidence that learning contributes to variation in sexually selected traits and preferences. For birdsong, poor conditions in early life affect song and female song preferences. Here, we show in zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, that nutrition and social conditions also later in life, during adolescence, affect male song learning and female song preference development, providing new insights into the sources of variation in sexually selected signals.
