Abstract Three sheep breeds have in the Netherlands an temporary exempt from the ban on tail docking. In this report the breeding policy of the past decade is evaluated. All three herd books have set up breeding value estimation. This is done most effectively for the Suffolk and the Clun Forest, both breeds have lowered the mean tail length at birth to about 17 cm, and this is about 2 cm less.
