Abstract Companies in the European Union poultry meat supply chain have to comply with European legislation on animal welfare, food safety and environmental protection. Whereas the legislation aims to guarantee a high quality poultry production, it also confronts the sector with extra costs. Countries outside the EU do not have the same extensive legislation. This report presents the results of a study on the competitiveness of the EU poultry meat sector. The production costs for poultry meat are calculated for several EU and non-EU countries.
