Survival of introduced bacteria in soil was improved by the addition of 10% bentonite clay. Water retention curves showed that more pores with an equivalent diameter between 1 and 3 μm were present when soil was amended with bentonite clay. Better survival of introduced bacteria could also be obtained by inoculating at lower initial soil moisture contents. It is suggested that if introduced bacteria are capable of entering artificially formed or originally present protective microniches in soil, their survival will improve.
