Abstract The objective of this work was to study the effect of food texture on feeding behavior and associated food intake in cats. Raw meat from beef carcasses was fed as strips or in puréed form to eight cats, and the number of bites, bite size, oral processing time, and number of meals were recorded. The physical structure of the food had a significant effect on the feeding behavior in cats, but less effect on the amount of food ingested. The study is now continuing to look at beef offal with different textural and palatability properties.
