    iron-oxides - tropical soils - kaolinite - transformations - micromorphology - replacement - saprolite - ilmenite - hematite - india
In geologically stable areas in the tropics, climatic changes and geomorphic cycles give origin to polygenetic soils. Polygenesis involves new soil formation phases taking place on preweathered materials from previous phases, resulting in soils with rather similar chemical and mineralogical properties. Polygenetic soils from Minas Gerais, Brazil, were investigated with the purpose of distinguishing mineralogical aspects in relation to polygenesis. The soil materials were studied by micromorphology and electron microscope and analyzed by XRD. All soils are strongly weathered and even show weathered grains of ilmenite and quartz. The soils show two phases of kaolinite formation (pseudomorphs after mica and precipitation from solution) and of accumulation of iron compounds. Desilication causes gibbsite formation from kaolinite, occasionally even in the deep saprolite. Superposed processes can be due to progressively deeper weathering or to changes of the external environment
Mineralogy and geochemistry of density-separated Greek lignite fractions
    Iordanidis, A. ; Doesburg, J.D.J. van - \ 2006

    trace-elements - coal fractions
In this study, lignite samples were collected from the Ptolemais region, northern Greece, homogenized, crushed to less than I nun, and separated in three density fractions using heavy media. The mineralogical investigation of the density fractions showed a predominance of pyrite in the light fractions, a fact that might be related to either the poor separation or pyrite being trapped between relatively large pure coal particles during the density fractionation. The geochemical analysis revealed that arsenic (As) and boron (B) tend to concentrate in the lighter fractions, while iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) are associated with the heavier fractions. No clear indications were drawn for calcium (Ca), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and phosphorus (P).

Stratification of parent material in European volcanic and related soils studied by laser-diffraction grain-sizing and chemical analysis
    Buurman, P. ; Garcia-Rodeja, E. ; Martinez-Cortizas, A. ; Doesburg, J.D.J. van - \ 2004

    size
Sedimentary stratification identified by field descriptions of 12 soils derived wholly or partly from volcanic materials was compared with results obtained by chemical analyses (contents and ratios of lithogenic elements, contents of heavy metals) and detailed grain-size data after removal of organic matter and amorphous fractions. The finest sedimentary stratification was indicated by cluster analysis of ratios of lithogenic elements and by the grain-size analyses. Sedimentary stratification in the field is difficult to determine or describe when (1) the deposits are strongly weathered, (2) soil horizon boundaries coincide with stratification boundaries or (3) stratification is very fine. Nevertheless, field descriptions are a reasonably good way of differentiating parent materials, though they often underestimate the number of sedimentary layers. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
