    Hoge kwaliteit water wordt schaarser. Dat dwingt de glastuinbouw zorgvuldig met de teeltfactor water om te gaan en minder afhankelijk van oppervlaktewater te worden. Hemelwater blijft de belangrijkste bron maar 100% dekking is te duur. Omgekeerde osmose blijft de meest aantrekkelijke techniek om aanvullend gietwater te realiseren. Voorwaarde is dat er oplossingen komen voor de brijnlozingen.

    De Kaderrichtlijn Water brengt een aantal beleidsmatige veranderingen: de beoordeling van oppervlaktewaterkwaliteit wordt meer locatiespecifiek en de principes voor de bescherming en het duurzaam gebruik van water moeten worden geintegreerd. Dit geldt ook voor thermische verontreinigingen, niet alleen qua ruimtelijke verspreiding maar ook middels het resulterende effect. Momenteel wordt het effect van toegevoegde warmte veelal met behulp van generieke milieunormen beoordeeld. Het Institute for Marine Resource and Ecosystem Studies (IMARES) ontwikkelde een nieuwe methode om de effecten van thermische verontreiniging locatiespecifiek te kunnen beoordelen. Met deze methode is het bovendien mogelijk om het risico van verschillende stressoren (thermische effecten, toxiciteit, zuurstofloosheid, etc.) te integreren tot één risico-indicatie

    In alle waterstromen in een kas zijn gewasbeschermingsmiddelen aangetroffen. Als norm voor de waterstromen binnen de kas is de MTR (Maximaal Toelaatbaar Risico) voor oppervlaktewater genomen. Wanneer water met een concentratie aan middel boven de MTR wordt geloosd kan dit een probleem zijn voor de kwaliteit van het oppervlaktewater. Recirculeren is de beste oplossing, maar telers zijn dan afhankelijk van de kwaliteit van het water waarmee ze starten

    A cost evaluation of CO2 sequestration by aqueous mineral carbonation has been made using either wollastonite (CaSiO3) or steel slag as feedstock. First, the process was simulated to determine the properties of the streams as well as the power and heat consumption of the process equipment. Second, a basic design was made for the major process equipment, and total investment costs were estimated with the help of the publicly available literature and a factorial cost estimation method. Finally, the sequestration costs were determined on the basis of the depreciation of investments and variable and fixed operating costs. Estimated costs are 102 and 77 Euro/ton CO2 net avoided for wollastonite and steel slag, respectively. For wollastonite, the major costs are associated with the feedstock and the electricity consumption for grinding and compression (54 and 26 Euro/ton CO2 avoided, respectively). A sensitivity analysis showed that additional influential parameters in the sequestration costs include the liquid-to-solid ratio in the carbonation reactor and the possible value of the carbonated product. The sequestration costs for steel slag are significantly lower due to the absence of costs for the feedstock. Although various options for potential cost reduction have been identified, CO2 sequestration by current aqueous carbonation processes seems expensive relative to other CO2 storage technologies. The permanent and inherently safe sequestration of CO2 by mineral carbonation may justify higher costs, but further cost reductions are required, particularly in view of (current) prices of CO2 emission rights. Niche applications of mineral carbonation with a solid residue such as steel slag as feedstock and/or a useful carbonated product hold the best prospects for an economically feasible CO2 sequestration process.     Waterschappen treffen al jaren diverse bestrijdingsmiddelen aan in het oppervlaktewater. Carbendazim is een van de boosdoeners. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat een deel van het middel na een bespuiting van het gewas af kan spoelen. Dit kan problemen veroorzaken wanneer op het oppervlaktewater geloosd wordt.

    The mechanisms of aqueous wollastonite carbonation as a possible carbon dioxide sequestration process were investigated experimentally by systematic variation of the reaction temperature, CO2 pressure, particle size, reaction time, liquid to solid ratio and agitation power. The carbonation reaction was observed to occur via the aqueous phase in two steps: (1) Ca leaching from the CaSiO3 matrix and (2) CaCO3 nucleation and growth. Leaching is hindered by a Ca-depleted silicate rim resulting from incongruent Ca-dissolution. Two temperature regimes were identified in the overall carbonation process. At temperatures below an optimum reaction temperature, the overall reaction rate is probably limited by the leaching rate of Ca. At higher temperatures, nucleation and growth of calcium carbonate are probably limiting the conversion, due to a reduced (bi)carbonate activity. The mechanisms for the aqueous carbonation of wollastonite were shown to be similar to those reported previously for an industrial residue and a Mg-silicate. The carbonation of wollastonite proceeds rapidly relative to Mg¿silicates, with a maximum conversion in 15 min of 70% at , 20 bar CO2 partial pressure and particle size of . The obtained insight in the reaction mechanisms enables the energetic and economic assessment of CO2 sequestration by wollastonite carbonation, which forms an essential next step in its further development.

    Mineral CO2 sequestration, i.e., carbonation of alkaline silicate Ca/Mg minerals, analogous to natural weathering processes, is a possible technology for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. In this paper, alkaline Ca-rich industrial residues are presented as a possible feedstock for mineral CO2 sequestration. These materials are cheap, available near large point sources of CO2, and tend to react relatively rapidly with CO2 due to their chemical instability. Ground steel slag was carbonated in aqueous suspensions to study its reaction mechanisms. Process variables, such as particle size, temperature, carbon dioxide pressure, and reaction time, were systematically varied, and their influence on the carbonation rate was investigated.     The environmental impact and recovery associated with the long and uninterrupted disposal of large volumes of moderately contaminated dredged material from the port of Rotterdam was studied at nearby dumping sites in the North Sea. Observations were made on sediment contamination, ecotoxicity, biomarker responses and benthic community changes shortly after dumping at the 'North' site had ceased and at the start of disposal at the new dumping site 'Northwest'. During the period of dumping, very few benthic invertebrates were found at the North site. Concentrations of cadmium, mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and tributyltin (TBT) in the fine sediment fraction (<63 mum) from this site were 2-3 times higher than at the reference site. In four different bioassays with marine invertebrates the sediments showed no acute toxic effects. In tissue (pyloric caeca) of resident starfish Asterias rubens, residual levels of mercury, zinc, PCBs and dioxin-like activity were never more than twice those at the reference site. Four different biomarkers (DNA integrity, cytochrome P450 content, benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase activity and acetylcholinesterase inhibition) were used on the starfish tissues, but no significant differences were found between North and the reference site. Minor pathological effects were observed in resident dab Limanda limanda. One year after dumping had ceased at the North site, a significant increase in the species richness and abundance of benthic invertebrates and a concomitant decrease in the fine sediment fraction of the seabed were observed. After 8.2 million m(3) of moderately contaminated dredged material had been dumped at the new dumping site Northwest, the species richness and abundance of benthic invertebrates declined over an area extending about 1-2 km eastwards. This correlated with a shift in sediment texture from sand to silt. The contamination of the fine sediment fraction at the Northwest location doubled. It is concluded that marine benthic resources at and around the dumping sites have been adversely affected by physical disturbance (burial, smothering). However, no causal link could be established with sediment-associated contaminants from the dredged spoils. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

    This paper provides an empirical analysis of the effects of weight-based pricing in the collection of household waste. Using a comprehensive panel data set on all households in a Dutch municipality we estimate short-run as well as long-run price effects for the amounts of both compostable and non-recyclable household waste. We find significant and sizeable price effects, with the elasticity for compostable waste being four times as large as the elasticity for non-recyclable waste. Long-run elasticities are about 30% larger than short-run elasticities
