Potential of tree-ring analysis in a wet tropical forest: A case study on 22 commercial tree species in Central Africa

Implementing sustainable forest management requires basic information on growth, ages, reproduction and survival of exploited tree species. This information is generally derived from permanent sample plots where individual trees are monitored. Accurately estimating growth rates and especially tree ages from plots is however challenging, as plots often contain only few individuals of the exploited species and monitoring periods cover only a fraction of the life-span of most trees. Alternatively, tree-ring analysis is increasingly used to obtain accurate age estimates and growth rates for tropical tree species, especially in regions with seasonally harsh conditions. However, for species from wet tropical forests (>4000 mm year-1 rainfall) few tree-ring studies exist. Under persistent high levels of rainfall, formation of distinct tree rings is uncertain due to the lack of strong seasonal variation in climate factors. Here we evaluated the potential of applying tree-ring analysis on commercial tree species in a wet tropical forest in Central-Africa. For this purpose we screened the wood anatomy of 22 tree species for the presence of tree-ring structures and, on a subset of five species, we assessed crossdating potential and evaluated the annual character of tree-ring formation by radiocarbon dating. A total of 14 of the 22 tree species showed distinct tree-ring boundaries. Radiocarbon proved annual tree-ring formation in four of the five tested species. Crossdating between trees was problematic for all species and impeded exactly dating each detected ring and building tree-ring chronologies. We also show that diameter growth rates vary strongly between and among species, with important consequences for the calculation of future timber yields. Tree-ring analysis can thus be applied on tree species growing in wet tropical forests to obtain growth rates. We argue that tree-ring analysis should actually be applied on more tree species from different areas to obtain accurate, site specific growth data. This data is urgently required to design and improve sustainable forest management practices.

Combining dendrochronology and matrix modelling in demographic studies: An evaluation for Juniperus procera in Ethiopia
    Couralet, C. ; Sass, U.G.W. ; Sterck, F.J. ; Zuidema, P.A. - \ 2005

    tropical deciduous forest - tree-ring chronologies - pterocarpus-angolensis - growth rings - rain-forest - dynamics - periodicity - populations - management - community
Tree demography was analysed by applying dendrochronological techniques and matrix modelling on a static data set of Juniperus procera populations of Ethiopian dry highland forests. Six permanent sample plots were established for an inventory of diameters and 11 stem discs were collected for dendrochronological analysis. J. procera was proved to form concentric annual growth layers in response to seasonal changes in precipitation. Uncertainty analysis for the matrix model revealed its robustness to variations in parameter estimates. The major outcome was that the population growth rate is very sensitive to changes in growth or survival of trees between 10 and 40 cm DBH. For forest management this implies that these intermediate sized individuals should be protected and less used for harvest. This study documents that interesting results can be achieved using a relatively simple approach that can easily be adopted for other areas or with other species. However, the matrix modelling requires more precise knowledge about the trees¿ fecundity and survival (especially for the smaller individuals) and more consistent inventories. For tree-ring analysis it can be concluded that J. procera from Ethiopia has potential to investigate the relationship between tree growth and precipitation with a high temporal resolution

Simulation of growth and competition in mixed stands of Douglas-fir and beech

For a long time, the emphasis in silviculture in Western Europe was solely on even-aged, monospecific stands; many empirical stand-level growth models were developed and successfully used for managing such stands. In contrast, no generally accepted growth and yield approach has emerged so far for mixed forests. Moreover, the inexhaustible number of species combinations, management regimes, and site-dependent interactions make an empirical approach less suitable.

In the present study, a mechanistic model was developed that simulates growth and yield in mixed forest stands. Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) were used in this research. In the model, tree growth is dependent on radiation availability. Stand development is largely driven by competition for radiation. A spatial module was developed to investigate the effects of tree and stand characteristics on radiation interception. The study showed that in heterogeneous stands a spatial approach is needed to account for competition between trees.

Growth of the trees was estimated using the radiation-use efficiency concept (RUE). Results revealed that detailed process models can be used to estimate RUE and that it is a suitable tool for (mixed) forest modelling.

To describe the distribution of the dry matter growth, a separate module was developed using functional relationships between tree components: the dry matter distribution is driven by the aim to maintain structural balances within the tree. The study showed that this approach is able to reproduce the development of an individual forest tree. The approach was thus considered very suitable for modelling the effects of between-tree competition for resources on growth and development of mixed forest stands.

The overall growth model, COMMIX, was applied to investigate the effects of stand composition on mixed stand productivity, using a replacement series. Analysis showed that the productivity of mixed forest stands is generally somewhere in between the yield levels of the monocultures of the less productive and the most productive species. It will only be possible to achieve higher yields in mixed stands if these stands have a relatively small proportion of the sub-dominant species. In the case of Douglas-fir and beech, the maintenance of a mixed stand appeared to conflict with the maximization of the wood production.

Insufficient data are available on mixed stands to directly support decision taking in forest management. New research tools capable of providing forest managers with information on possible management scenarios and on the consequences of certain management regimes are therefore urgently required. The present modelling approach is part of an ongoing development of models for mixed stands. The infinite variety of possible species mixtures coupled with the range of environmental conditions under which mixtures might be grown, necessitates a mechanistic approach and emphasises the potential use of such models.

The study deals with the rain forest area in south-west Côte d'lvoire (Taï National Park). Descriptions are given of the area's history, agricultural practices, geology, geomorphology, soils, flora and vegetation. The shifting cultivation system based on upland rice was studied as it is practiced without land shortage and under constraints. Possible adaptations of the system to the increasing population pressure have been tested on the fields of local farmers. Special attention was paid to the dynamics of the weed population and to the competition between rice and weeds. The classifications of primary forest, secondary forest and field vegetations are based on their complete floristic composition and was carried out by tabular comparison of plot-data.
