    Geothermal spas as a local development factor, the case of Poland

    This paper investigates whether the endogenous geothermal energy resources used for local tourism facilities are a factor of local development. We answer this research question by examining the local socioeconomic development dynamics in years 1995–2015 in the six selected Polish municipalities that established geothermal spas at different years. A model introduces the concept of switch variables, where a geothermal spa is the assumed switching factor in a municipality's socioeconomic development. The statistical procedures are adopted from factor analysis and trend estimation methodologies. Our conclusions lead to a positive assessment of a geothermal water park's contribution to a municipality's socioeconomic development.

    Species-rich grassland can persist under nitrogen-rich but phosphorus-limited conditions

    Aim: Deposition of nitrogen is assumed to cause loss of botanical diversity, probably through increased production and exclusion of less competitive species. However, if production is (co-)limited by phosphorus, acceleration of the phosphorus cycle may be responsible for the diversity loss and, where that is the case, nitrogen emission reduction may turn out to be an ineffective mitigation strategy. Here we study the feasibility of this mechanism through adding potassium and phosphorus to grassland where nitrogen limitation is absent. Methods: We made vegetation relevés in a long-term agricultural fertilisation experiment where potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen were being added to grassland on drained peat where nitrogen availability was high, even in unfertilised plots. We applied a multivariate analysis to investigate the effect of additions of K, K + P and K + P + N on the species composition. Results: Unfertilised plots had a very low biomass production and were rich in plant species despite their high nitrogen availability. Addition of potassium led to a strongly increased production but did not result in a reduction of species numbers. Phosphorus in addition to potassium increased production still further and decreased species numbers, most notably the number of endangered species. Conclusions: Even under nitrogen rich conditions species richness may be high in grasslands where phosphorous provides a limitation to plant growth. Phosphorus limitation and phosphorus enrichment are both common in grassland, at least in north-western Europe. Part of the general decrease in species numbers that is commonly ascribed to nitrogen enrichment may therefore be due to phosphorus enrichment. If phosphorus and nitrogen are co-limiting (which is often the case) the current nitrogen emission reduction policies may be effective, but not sufficient to restore grassland diversity to its pre-industrial level.

    The determinants of resource-providing contracts: Case-study of the Polish dairy sector

    Growth in the agri-food sector in developing and transition countries is typically impeded by major imperfections in both input and output markets. Providing resources to farmers as part of an interlinked market contract is one way of overcoming these market imperfections. This paper identifies the factors that determine access to these types of contracts for smallholders. The econometric analysis uses data from a unique survey of Polish dairy farm households during transition. The main conclusions are that competition and FDI in the processing sector are major driving forces for the spread of resource-providing contracts.
    The identifiability of parameters in a water quality model of the Biebrza River, Poland

    The identifiability of model parameters of a steady state water quality model of the Biebrza River and the resulting variation in model results was examined by applying the Monte Carlo method which combines calibration, identifiability analysis, uncertainty analysis, and sensitivity analysis. The water quality model simulates the steady state concentration profiles of chloride, phosphate, ammonium, and nitrate as a function of distance along a river. The water quality model with the best combination of parameter values simulates the observed concentrations very well. However, the range of possible modelled concentrations obtained for other more or less equally eligible combinations of parameter values is rather wide. This range in model outcomes reflects possible errors in the model parameters. Discrepancies between the range in model outcomes and the validation data set are only caused by errors in model structure, or (measurement) errors in boundary conditions or input variables. In this sense the validation procedure is a test of model capability, where the effects of calibration errors are filtered out. It is concluded that, despite some slight deviations between model outcome and observations, the model is successful in simulating the spatial pattern of nutrient concentrations in the Biebrza River.

    A study was performed to quantify the error in results of a water quality model of the Biebrza River, Poland, due to uncertainties in calibrated model parameters. The procedure used in this study combines calibration and sensitivity analysis. Finally,the model was validated to test the model capability, where the effects of calibration errors was filtered out. The water quality model with the best combination of parameter values simulates the observed concentrations very well, although the range of modelled concentrations at each location is rather wide when other more or less equally eligible combinations of parameter values are taken into consideration.

    De fout in resultaten van een waterkwaliteitsmodel van de Biebrza in Polen, die het gevolg is van onzekerheden bij kalibratie van modelparameters, is gekwantificeerd. De gebruikte methode combineert kalibratie en gevoeligheidsanalyse. Het model is gevalideerd om de bekwaamheid ervan te toetsen, waarbij het effect van kalibratiefouten is weggefilterd. Het model simuleert de gemeten concentraties zeer goed met de beste combinatie van parameterwaarden. Het bereik van berekende concentraties is echter breed als andere min of meer gelijk verkiesbare parametercombinaties in beschouwing worden genomen.
