Research on natural regeneration of Dipterocarpaceae is described. Work in greenhouse experiments, in planting experiments in natural forests and from monitoring of natural regeneration in undisturbed natural forest are discussed. In addition work on photosynthesis measurements is discussed. The findings show that survival of dipterocarp seedlings under closed forest canopies is not related to any chemical soil properties or to light intensities. Best growth takes place nearest to the fine roots of the mother tree. The photosynthesis measurements show that 89% of the time light intensity is not high enough for photosynthesis in the dipterocarp seedlings and that these seedlings survive despite a negative carbon balance from photosynthesis. Sugar analyses of roots and stems show that available carbohydrate is relatively higher in the roots and also higher during the night time than in daytime, while also being higher closest to the roots of the mother tree, indicating a transport of sugars from the mother tree to the seedlings through the ectomycorrhizal connections. It is concluded that in practical forest management this nursing role should be taken in consideration when formulating silvicultural management options, particularly in forest regeneration.

The present thesis describes the results of research on the distribution and possible causes for the decrease of the seagrass Z. noltii in the Wadden Sea, carried out from 1986 to 1990. Chapter 2 examines the relation between the distribution of Zostera dominated ecosystems in the international Wadden Sea and several possibly limiting environmental factors, i.e. period of emersion, sediment type, sediment stability, mean salinity and geographical region. Chapter 3 describes the former and present distribution of Z.noltii dominated ecosystems in the Dutch Wadden Sea in relation with their environment, i.e. period of emersion, sediment type, sediment stability, macroalgae and lugworms. The seasonal dynamics and structures of a Z. noltii dominated ecosystem, including periphyton and mudsnails, on the tidal flats of Terschelling in the Dutch Wadden Sea are studied in Chapter 4. Results of a shading experiment on the effects of periphyton on the growth, biomass and survival mechanisms of Z. noltii on the tidal flats of Terschelling are discussed in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 describes the effects of the length of light periods on the growth, biomass and photosynthesis-irradiance curves of Z.noltii originating from the Netherlands and Mauritania. Chapter 7 deals with results of an exclosure experiment on the role of the periphyton-grazing mudsnail H. ulvae on the growth and biomass of Z.noltii In Chapter 8, the results of a transplantation experiment on the interaction between the seagrass Z. noltii and the bioturbating lugworm A. marina on the tidal flats of Terschelling is described. Chapter 9 summarizes and discusses the main results of the previous chapters in relation to the hypothesis.

To learn about the interactions between individual trees and between trees and other forest organisms, long-term monitoring of spontaneous forest development is necessary. A complete monitoring system has been developed including a computer package for analysis of long-term forest dynamics observations. A method of nested plot data collection on forest architecture and plant species composition has been worked out for monitoring purposes. The spatial and temporal relations between data are numerically expressed. Therefore a three-dimensional single-tree architectural model has been worked out to describe asymmetric tree shapes with a minimum of measured data points. Time series of forest development at different sites are built up on the basis of a digital descriptive model of the complex reality of forest structure and species composition.

To guarantee continuity in data storage and data query a commercially available database and a geographical information system were used in the design of the information system. A visual interpretation of data is enabled by graphical system outputs such as profiles and ground plans of tree crown projections, providing substitutes for traditional profile drawings and maps. Application programs were developed to solve specific problems, as a step towards predictive models. In an application program, for integration with remote sensing studies, an aerial view of the forest canopy is simulated on the basis of measured plot data. This view provides a ground-truth reference for the training and interpretation of remote sensing images. To explain the growth of individual trees and the distribution patterns of herbs and tree regeneration on the forest floor, another application was developed, simulating the penetration of direct and of diffuse light. For the reconstruction of forest growth with tree ring data, a technique of animation was elaborated facilitating a visual interpretation of the forest development. The system is applied to demonstrate forest development in some European forest reserves using forest architectural descriptions and vegetation releves, tree ring data and historical sources.
