    The present paper discusses PERPEST, a model that uses case-based reasoning to predict the effects of a particular concentration of a pesticide on a defined aquatic ecosystem, based on published information about the effects of pesticides on the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems as observed in semifield experiments.     Meetgegevens van nutriënten en bestrijdingsmiddelen zijn gebruikt om een beeld te geven van de oppervlaktewaterkwaliteit van de Afgedamde Maas, de Bommelerwaard, en de Maas. Op basis van regionale gegevens over het gebruik van bestrijdingsmiddelen in de fruitteelt-, chrysantenteelt-, rundveehouderij- en akkerbouwsector zijn emissies van stoffen naar het open water van de Bommelerwaard en de uiterwaarden van de Afgedamde Maas berekend. De verdwijning van stoffen uit het oppervlaktewater als gevolg vanafbraak en verdamping is berekend. Het restant van de geëmitteerde hoeveelheid stoffen vormt de belasting van de Afgedamde Maas. De resultaten zijn gepresenteerd op het niveau van deelgebieden en teeltsectoren.

    Modelling the leaching and drainage of pesticides in the Netherlands: the GeoPEARL model

    A one-dimensional pesticide leaching model, PEARL, in combination with a geographical information system was used to calculate the leaching potential of pesticides into local surface waters and the regional groundwater. Calculations were performed for6405 plots, which are unique combinations of spatially distributed model inputs. To have the seepage and drainage fluxes correctly described, the model was loosely coupled with a regional groundwater model. Simulations were carried out for four pesticides with different properties. Results showed that, generally, the average fluxes of pesticide into local surface waters were higher than the average fluxes of pesticide into the regional groundwater. Discharge by rapid drainage mechanisms (i.e. tube drainage and surface drainage) dominated. For the four pesticides, different spatial patterns of leaching and discharge by drainage water were predicted. It was shown that the spatial pattern was affected by a large number of interacting processes, and that the relative importance of these processes differed between the four example pesticides. This should be kept in mind when applying the USES system, which describes the leaching of pesticides on the basis of a limited number of pesticide parameters. Frequency distributions of the leaching concentration were compared with results from the first tier of the Dutch pesticide registration procedure, which comes down to the application of a single standard scenario. For two pesticides, the first tier was not strict enough. It was shown that it is not possible to find one single standard scenario, which applies to the full range of registered pesticides. This means that the number of standard scenarios should be increased. Direct application of a regional-scalemodel, however, is to be preferred, because it provides the user with frequency distributions and gives information about areas of safe usage.

    Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), its main metabolites, and other organochlorines were analyzed in soils (n=6), fluvial sediments (n=14), and fish (n=10) that were collected in several areas of the Amazon region in Brazil. The samples were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography coupled to electron capture detection. DDT residues were present in most of the collected sediments in concentrations of approximately 10 to 100 Šg/kg (ppb, dry weight). Some urban top soils were found to have more than 1 mg/kg (ppm). In fish, as much as 0.5 mg/kg of total DDT (wet weight) was found in the edible parts. The presence of p,p'-DDT in most of the samples reflects the use of this insecticide against vectors of malaria between 1946 and 1993, which hasled to its ubiquitous presence in the environment of the Brazilian Amazon.
    Estimating transformation rates of pesticides, to be used in the TOXSWA model, from water-sediment studies

    In the Dutch registration procedure the TOXSWA model is used to calculate the exposure of aquatic organisms to the pesticides applied in agriculture. The transformation rates in water and sediment, needed as input for the computations, are not asked directly in the registration procedure. Various test guidelines for water-sediment studies are discussed; they only yield pesticide dissipation rates in water and sediment. Water-sediment studies for three compounds were simulated with TOXSWA to estimate the transformation rates from the measured data. It was found that a detailed interpretation of the experiments and reported data is crucial before the water-sediment studies can be simulated correctly. Using the model, pesticide transformation could be assigned to mainly one of the layers or to both layers. These transformation rates do not depend on system properties, such as volumes of water and sediment, nor on the surface area of their interface. The procedure has to be tested for more pesticides and studies. The factors determining microbial transformation of pesticides in aquatic systems were studied; this allows improved characterization of the systems by measurements.

    Op 31 mei 2002 vond in Zwolle een symposium plaats met als thema 'Gifvrij beheer van groen en verhardingen in gemeenten'. Het Platform diffuse bronnen provincie Utrecht en de regioteams diffuse bronnen van de provincies Gelderland en Overijssel willen gemeenten helpen bij het verminderen van het gebruik van chemische bestrijdingsmiddelen. Daarom is het handboek 'Onkruid vergaat wel!' gemaakt, dat tijdens het symposium gepresenteerd werd.
