    Sinds begin 2008 worden in het Nationaal Plan Diervoeder Choline Chloride monsters (= diervoeder additief) gevonden waarbij de DR CALUX screenings-assay een sterk verdacht signaal geeft, maar bij de GC-HRMS geen dioxines en dl-PCB's worden gevonden. Dit rapport beschrijft de resultaten van nader onderzoek in twee Choline Chloride monsters (één met lage DR CALUX (ca. 2-3 ng BEQ/kg) en één met hoge DR CALUX respons (4-5 ng BEQ/kg) op gebromeerde vlamvertragers en broomdioxines

    Gebromeerde vlamvertragers (PBDE's, HBCD en TBBP-A) werden geanalyseerd in zwevend stof afkomstig van de Waddenzee en Eems-Dollard die bemonsterd werden in november/december 2005.     Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are used at relatively high concentrations in various materials and polymers.Their use has expanded considerably during the last three decades. The annual global demand was estimated to 200 000 tons in 1999. The most frequently used brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs). On behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality (LNV) a monitoring programme has been started in 2003, as part of the Programme nr. 378, ‘Guarding the Quality of Dutch Agricultural, Horticultural and Fishery Products’. The programme included a survey of BFRs in Dutch freshwater and marine fish, and shellfish. The results of this survey are presented in this report.

    The brominated flame retardants, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenyl-A (TBBP-A) were analysed in samples of human blood from 40 different individuals. In only one individual was HBCD detected. In about half of the individuals, TBBP-A was detected. When they were detected, the amounts of both chemicals were near the limits of quantification. That the chemicals were detected confirms that certain individuals were exposed to sources of these substances. The toxicological implications of these low levels are not well known. Very few studies of the toxicology of these compounds have been performed to date.

    In het kader van het RIKZ project ‘Lakmoes’ wordt de waterkwaliteit van de Waddenzee aan de hand van chemische parameters onderzocht. Omdat de ‘nieuwe milieuvervuilers’, de gebromeerde vlamvertragers al eerder zijn aangetoond in dit gebied [Zegers e.a. 2003], is het belangrijk om inzicht te krijgen in de verspreiding en gehaltes van deze verbindingen.

    The brominated flame retardants (BFRs) tetrabromobisphenyl-A (TBBP-A) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) are widely used in Europe and may be transported to northern regions by long range transport, as has been modelled for other BFRs [Wania and Dugania, 2003] or via bird migration from southern source areas [Lindberg et al. 2003].Due to their physicalchemical properties, these chemicals have the potential to bioaccumulate and cause toxicity in exposed organisms. Biomagnification of TBBP-A and HBCD in the food chain puts predators high in the chain, such as the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), at increased risk of exposure and accumulation. Recent studies have demonstrated substantial levels of different flame retardants, including HBCD, in eggs of Swedish populations of F. peregrinus [Lindberg et al., 'Research ASAP'] and guillemot (Uria algae) eggs collected over the last three decades [Sellström et al., 2003]. The objective of the present study was to analyse concentrations of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A) in 34 peregrine falcon eggs collected in Greenland from 1986 to 2003.
