    Fusarium spp. in Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta): From Colonization to Infection

    With the aim of evaluating the presence of Fusarium spp. in sea turtles with and without lesions and assessing the risk factors favoring colonization and/or infection, 74 loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) admitted to rescue and rehabilitation clinics in Italy were analyzed. The study compared 31 individuals with no apparent macroscopic lesions and 43 individuals with macroscopic lesions. Shell and skin samples were analyzed using Calcofluor white with 10% potassium hydroxide, standard histopathological examination, and fungal cultures. Fusarium spp. were isolated more frequently from animals with superficial lesions (39%) than from those with no macroscopic lesions (16%). Isolates from animals with superficial lesions were Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) lineages haplotypes 9, 12, and 27 (unnamed lineages), FSSC-2 (Fusarium keratoplasticum), Fusarium oxysporum (27%), and Fusarium brachygibbosum (3%). In contrast, only F. solani haplotypes 9 and 12 were isolated from animals with no macroscopic lesions. The presence of lesions was identified as a risk factor for the occurrence of Fusarium spp. Of the 74 animals, only 7 (9.5%) scored positive on microscopic examination with Calcofluor, and histological examination of those 7 animals revealed necrosis, inflammatory cells, and fungal hyphae in the carapace and skin. The results of this study suggest that fusariosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of shell and skin lesions in sea turtles. Direct examination using Calcofluor and potassium hydroxide was not useful to diagnose the infection. Histopathological examination and fungal culture should be performed to ensure correct treatment and infection control.

    Als reactie op de aanlandplicht heeft de kottersector via de Coöperatieve Visserij Organisatie (CVO) het initiatief opgepakt om de selectiviteit van de vistuigen te verhogen om zo weinig mogelijk discards te vangen en aan te landen. Na een ontwerpfase met modelonderzoek in de flume tank van SINTEF te Hirtshals, Denemarken, en met ervaringen uit eerdere projecten werden op verscheidene schepen netinnovaties uitgeprobeerd. Er werd onderzoek gedaan op een schip met boomkor, verschillende schepen vissend met pulsvistuigen en op twinriggers. Hierbij werd aanvankelijk gewerkt op ‘trial-and error’ basis met in sommige gevallen zelfmonitoring. Vervolgens werden enkele uitgebreide vangst- en bijvangstvergelijkingen gedaan met medewerkers van IMARES aan boord.

    Deze rapportage geeft een schatting van de omvang van de bijvangst in de beroepsvisserij nabij kunstwerken op basis van fuikvangsten en diverse interviews. Daarnaast is er een experiment uitgevoerd waarbij er gekeken is naar de overleving van schubvis nadat zij in fuiken hebben gezeten. Hierbij zijn de baars en blankvoorn gebruikt om de overleving te testen in relatie tot de volgende variabelen: aanwezigheid aal: geen (0 stuks), weinig aal (7 stuks) en veel aal (50 stuks), staduur van de fuik: 3, 6 of 9 dagen en dichtheid van vis in een fuik: 60 stuks tegenover 240 stuks.

    This report describes the results of a short and medium term forecast over the period 2016-2019 given different scenarios of discard survival rates (10-50%) of North Sea plaice and North Sea sole. Additionally, average value of landings over the year 2019 is calculated per scenario using the landings derived from the biomass and the average price per kg of both stocks. Potential loss in average gross revenue from value of landings can be inferred from these.

    The Cod monitoring program is part of the Dutch cod avoidance plan developed by the Dutch Government together with the Dutch fishing sector. The transition of kW-days between gears is regulated by the European cod recovery plan (EC 423/2004 and EC 1342/2008) and depends on the yearly CpUE-ratio of cod between the respective gear groups. This report presents the results of the third quarter in 2015.

    In this paper, we synthesize information presented at the 2nd Fishery Dependent Information (FDI) Conference, held in Rome, Italy, from 2 to 6 March 2014. We review current issues and advances in the collection, interpretation and application of fishery-dependent data, and highlight emergent findings in the field. Key issues include (i) the design and collection of data associated with commercial and recreational fisheries and the use of these data to support conventional and novel approaches to fisheries science and management and (ii) the role of fishers in co-management and policy setting. We noted that since the 2010 FDI conference a paradigm shift towards full engagement of key stakeholders started to take place. It also became evident that trust between stakeholders, managers, and scientists is necessary to develop efficient fishery monitoring programmes. While building such trust among key players often begins in informal settings, eventually one must evolve structured, formalized, and agreed processes for such interactions. We also conclude that because of the diversity of fisheries any determination of “best practices” may be difficult. Instead, we provide a list of “best principles” emerged from the conference.

    De aanlandplicht betekent een serieuze verandering voor de demersale visserij. Mogelijkheden voor verwerking en gebruik van discards zijn te vinden in verschillende (bestaande en nog te ontwikkelen) afzetmarkten en sectoren. Dit rapport bevat een aanbodanalyse die een inschatting kan geven van de te verwachten discards die in de Nederlandse havens aangeland gaan worden. Hiermee wordt een eerste stap gezet naar het inzichtelijk maken van de data die nodig is om toekomstige ketenmogelijkheden te ontwikkelen.

    Vanaf januari 2016 wordt de discard regelgeving vanuit de EU aangepast. Dit betekent dat de sector zich moet committeren aan deze regelgeving. Hierdoor zullen de niet gewenste vangsten die op dit moment nog overboord gaan, aangeland moeten worden. Er is een traject ingezet om de kansen tot valorisatie van de discards te ontwikkelen. In een separaat traject is bepaald welke hoeveelheden van soorten er vanaf 1 januari 2016 vanuit de demersale visserij zullen worden aangeland. In voorliggend technisch rapport wordt deze analyse verder vormgegeven door een beschrijving te geven van de nutritionele waarde van de discards.
    Avoiding the by-catch of boarfish in pelagic trawling

    The Dutch pelagic freezer trawler group (Redersvereniging voor de Zeevisserij, RVZ) wishes to avoid the by-catch of non-target species such as boarfish (Capros aper L.) as much as possible. This species is unsuitable for human consumption, and when present in the fishing gear with other species they will reduce product quality. A project was set-up in the VIP-programme. The goal of this project was to reduce the by-catch of boarfish as much as possible by early recognition of this species in echograms and technical trawl adaptions. This report focuses on the results of the acoustic work.

    Between 2011 and 2013, the monitoring program existed of an extended analysis of self-reported cod catch data (both landings and discards) in combination with the regular DCF discard monitoring program, an extra observer program and the CCTV-project in TR-fisheries (see Kraan et al. (2013 and 2014)). Over the years, the ministry of Economic Affairs and IMARES drew the conclusion that monitoring cod discards via the self-reporting scheme asked for disproportionately high effort of the TR-skippers while discards were hardly affecting CpUE rates (Ministry of Economic Affairs (2014)). Therefore, it was agreed upon a yearly analysis of the EU-logbook (hereafter logbook) data in combination with VMS-data, which is readily available. However, to remain updated, an overview of fishing activity, cod catches and cod Landings per Unit Effort (LpUE) of four gear types per quarter is requested by the ministry of Economic Affairs. This report presents the results of the first quarter in 2015.

    The EKOFISH Group, the North Sea Foundation (NSF) and WWF-Netherlands partnered up with IMARES in 2013 to explore whether an industrial survey can be used to strengthen scientific assessment of key commercial by-catch species in the North Sea flatfish fishery. The project was broken down in two consecutive phases. The first phase of the project served to establish the potential role of an industrial survey.The second phase of the project was used to run a pilot-survey and served to determine the practical feasibility of an industrial survey. This report synthesises the findings of the research that was carried out in phase one and two of the project and discusses the main findings to give answer to the main question that has guided this research project 'can an industrial survey for North Sea brill, dab, lemon sole and turbot strengthen scientific assessment of these stocks?'.

    De pelagische diepvriestrawler visserij richt zich volledig op vis die geschikt is voor humane consumptie. Per 1 januari 2015 is de pelagische zeevisserij in de Europese wateren geconfronteerd met een verplichting om alle gevangen soorten waarvan een vangst quotum is vastgesteld, aan land te brengen en niets van deze vissoorten over boord te zetten. Dit is de eerste realisatie van een reeks aanlandverplichtingen van vis in het kader van het Europese Gemeenschappelijke Visserij Beleid. De aanlanding van deze visserij zal als gevolg van de aanlandplicht veranderen. In dit deelrapport wordt ingegaan op (i) de omvang en samenstelling van de hoeveelheid vis die onder het voormalige systeem als discards beschouwd wordt en (ii) in de hoeveelheid vis die als basis van mogelijke verwerkingsstappen voor valorisatie gebruikt kunnen worden. Daarnaast wordt een verwachting geschetst van de te verwachten hoeveelheid discards die aangeland moeten gaan worden onder de aanlandverplichting die vanaf 1 januari 2015 van kracht is. Dit geeft inzicht in de mogelijkheden voor industriële benutting van de “discards” die een waarde verhoging ten opzichte van laagwaardige verwerking tot vismeel meebrengt.

    collection efforts for these species in 2011, recommending commercial catch surveys as an option to improve data collection. Following from this Ekofish has taken the lead and has initiated a pilot data-collection project, in which commercial catch data will be collected aboard their twinrig vessels during one season for the species dab, lemon sole, turbot, and brill. The aim of this pilot project is to progress towards science-based management and MSC certification of the mentioned species. This project is carried out in collaboration with the NSF and IMARES. Phase one of this project explores the hurdles and the opportunities for fisheries management and stock assessment for the North Sea species brill, turbot, lemon sole and dab.
