Intercontinental transport of flowerbulbs in general takes place in climate controlled seagoing reefer containers. A shipment may take two up to six weeks. To maintain quality during this time span proper climate inside the container is important. ATO certification yields a quality assurance on aspects not covered in other standards or certification schemes, and primarily of interest to flowerbulb shipments.

Lily bulbs is an extremely temperature sensitive and precious commodity. Every now and then it happens that upon delivery the condition of the bulbs is disappointing. Several measures can be taken to reduce the quality loss during transport, both in terms of reefer unit settings and in terms of stowage in the container. It is unclear what exactly is the consequence of which measure.

Ethiopia has a big potential to grow more fruits and vegetables. Ethiopia’s current fruit and vegetable export is very limited. Scope for expanding and diversifying its export markets is large. Demand for fruits and vegetables is growing in nearby international markets, like the Middle East. Although Ethiopia is land locked, it is geographically close to the Middle East. To reach the Middle East, and other international markets, produce has to be transported to Djibouti where it can be shipped. Roads to Djibouti are generally good, but transportation takes long due to long waiting times at the border, sometimes up to ten hours. Fresh produce is sensitive and needs to be refrigerated to remain fresh and of good quality during such long transportation time. To start exporting to the Middle East it is of paramount importance to build a good reputation and to deliver the fruit and vegetables in good condition. Refrigerated container transport offers possibilities to make use of the potential to export more fruit and vegetables which arrive the market in good quality. This report offers an overview of the feasibility to use refrigerated container transport for Ethiopian fruit and vegetables export to the Middle East

containertransport - energiegebruik - koeltransport - appels - gecontroleerde omgeving - modellen - container transport - energy consumption - refrigerated transport - apples - controlled atmospheres - models
In this paper a concept for energy saving for refrigerated container transport is presented. The concept is based on model-predictive control of the set points of the cooling unit. These models predict energy consumption of the cooling unit, climatic conditions inside the cargo space, and the change in product quality. The objective of the control is to minimize energy consumption while retaining a certain level of product quality. After presenting the concept of the model-predictive control the predictive power of the models used are shown. These models show that we are able to predict energy consumption, temperature, humidity and gas conditions quite accurately. Furthermore, an indication is given for the quality change model to be employed. The impact of the novel control is shown by simulation of a transport of apples

Current day perishable supply chains require intermediate points for manual produce quality inspection. Over the last decade international seatransport of fruit and vegetables in reefer containers has grown tremendously. Reefer containers may completely close the cold chain only if produce quality inspection is automated. The observation of this growing need for automatic produce quality monitoring has triggered this research. The aim is twofold: to reveal a correlation between fruit gas exchange rates and actual produce quality aspects (1) and to automatically monitor fruit's gas exchange rates in containers from one-point gas concentration measurements only (2). Large experimental datasets have been collected to assess the correlation between respiration, ethylene production and ripeness-related firmness for Elstar apples. Both simulations and experiments have been done to test the feasibility of monitoring (variations in) respiratory activity over time. On the one hand the results prove that both objectives are feasible, at least for Elstar apples. On the other hand some uncertainties remain: 1. Uncertainty in the observed correlation between gas exchange rates and apple firmness, 2. On-line monitoring of gas exchange rates in reefer containers may be hampered by e.g. unknown leak rates, 3. To what extend may the observed correlation between quality aspects and gas exchange rates be generalised to other perishable commodities.
