ring test - animal proteins - analytical methods - microscopy - fish feeding - animal health - polymerase chain reaction - ringtest - dierlijke eiwitten - analytische methoden - microscopie - visvoeding - diergezondheid - polymerase-kettingreactie
The annual ring test for the detection of animal proteins in animal feed of the IAG - International Association for Feeding stuff Analysis, Section Feeding stuff Microscopy was organized by RIKILT - Wageningen UR, The Netherlands. The aim of the ring study was to provide the participants information on the performance of the local implementation of the detection method for their local quality systems. A further aim was to gather information about the application of the microscopic method. The current 2016 version of the IAG ring test for animal proteins facilitated the full scenario with the methods for microscopy and PCR as published in Regulation (EC) 51/2013 amending Annex VI of Regulation (EC) 152/2009 together with accompanying SOPs. All four samples were based on an artificial feed mimicking a formulation for ruminant feed. Two samples were labelled as fish feed (B and D), which was effectuated by adding 2% of a general fish meal. Adulteration was achieved by adding 0.1% pig MBM (B), 0.1% ruminant MBM (D) and a combination of 0.1% ruminant MBM and 0.1% fish meal (C). This combination of different spikes allowed the diverse application of the detection methods. Forty eight participants enrolled for the ring test, of which 45 submitted microscopic results. Of these, 20 participants applied the combination of microscopic and PCR analysis. Three participants submitted exclusively PCR results.

Public available government policies, papers and interviews with stakeholders are the information sources for this study. Russia has a population of 140m and a robust GDP growth. Doing business indicators indicate several deficiencies in the economic environment in the country, yet the outlook for agricultural development and food consumption patterns show ample business opportunities.

The costs and benefits of reintroduction of processed animal protein in diets for poultry and pigs in a completely channelled production system have been evaluated. It has to be decided in the discussion on reintroduction of processed animal proteins in feed for poultry and pigs, which tolerance level is allowed with regard to the species-to-species ban. The tolerance level is extremely important for investments to be made by the industry.

The International Association for Feeding stuff Analysis, section Feeding stuff Microscopy, organises annually a ring test for animal proteins for all their members. In this report the ring test for animal proteins is presented, which was organised by RIKILT in 2011 on behalf of the IAG section Feeding stuff Microscopy. A contamination level below 0.1%, i.e. 0.05% of animal proteins from terrestrial animals is also part of this ring test. The derogation to use fish meal for weaning ruminants, and the desire for further relaxation of the extended feed ban gave rise to inclusion of a contaminated fish meal, and a feel adulterated with feather meal. The main purpose of the ring test is to monitor the performance of the participating laboratories. The main part of this report presents and discusses the results in terms of sensitivity and specificity scores.

In July 2010 a rapid alert was issued by Spain concerning the presence of blood plasm in milk formula ("KUOVO") for calves. The blood plasma was detected by a microscopic staining method using tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). RIKILT investigated the suspect research sample by applying the standard research method for animal proteins and several additional staining methods, including TMB (macroscopic and microscopic).

In addition, RIKILT participated in a validation study for identification of bovine material by means of DNA analysis, in a workshop, and in a meeting in China. The interlaboratory study for DNA detection of bovine material showed that different protocols are comparable and that the identification of bovine material is feasible.

In het rapport 'The protein puzzle.
