Competitiveness of the EU egg industry. International comparison base year 2013
    Horne, P.L.M. van - \ 2014
    Wageningen : LEI Wageningen UR (Report / LEI Wageningen UR LEI 2014-041) - ISBN 9789086156962 - 36

In this report the impact of reducing or removing import tariffs on the competitiveness of the EU egg sector is studied. The results show that the offer price of whole egg powder in 2013 of some third countries is close to the average EU price. Despite the current import tariffs on whole egg powder, the third countries can be competitive on the EU market. In a scenario with a 50% lower import tariff, all third countries have a lower offer price of whole egg powder compared to the EU egg sector. In a scenario with zero import tariffs, all third countries have a considerably lower offer price of whole egg powder compared to the EU egg sector.

Because of animal welfare concerns in the EU, from 2012 only enriched cages will be allowed for the housing of laying hens (Council Directive 1999/74/EC). Production in enriched cages will increase the production cost of eggs. At the same time the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has launched a new round of negotiations to further liberalise trade in agricultural products. This report provides the results of a study on the impact of the EU Directive for EU egg processors. Within several scenarios, the increase in production costs (enriched cages) are combined with different levels of import levies and currency exchange rates. In general it can be concluded that in 2012 EU countries cannot compete on their home market for egg products with countries such as Ukraine, United States, Brazil and India.
The future of the Dutch egg processing industry

This research examines the competitiveness of the Dutch egg products industry, as well as the consequences of tightening up the laws concerning layer poultry on the competitive position of the Dutch egg production industry. A tightening of the laws has, in fact, the effect of raising the production cost, and in this research the central question revolves around whether animal welfare-friendly egg products are perceived as products with added value by the buyers of egg products (mainly industrial buyers) and will thus also be offered for sale at a higher price. Furthermore, it will be investigated what the probable developmental directions are in the egg products industry if this higher price cannot be realised

Multiphasic growth in the layer pullet : effects of nutrient restrictions during rearing
    Kwakkel, R.P. - \ 1994

Traditionally, layer pullets are reared on a least-cost basis. Feeding regimens, that allow pullets to consume a restricted amount of nutrients, have been designed to control body growth towards a 'target' weight and age. It was questioned whether the pattern of body growth in relation to the rate of development of particular organs during rearing interferes with the productive potential of the young hen. For the present study, it was hypothesized that the supply of nutrients for some organs may be critical at certain ages, as a result of their individual growth patterns. In this thesis, growth and development of the pullet body and its constituents has been studied by means of multiphasic growth functions. It was found that body weight at end of rearing ('target weight') is less important than type (which nutrient?) and phase (what age?) of restriction in determining egg performance. Furthermore, a pronounced growth spurt in the body growth curve was distinguished at around 19 wk of age ('the maturity growth spurt'), that appeared to be related to both the development of the reproductive organs and the onset of lay. The assessment of this growth spurt in a flock may help the producer in taking nutritional decisions. A certain amount of fat-free tissue in the body is suggested to be critical for the initiation of sexual growth. Fat growth at early rearing seemed to be functionally related to growth of the fat-free body: pullets on a low-lysine diet did not increase their fat-to-protein ratio at that stage of development. Fat growth at late rearing is stored as an energy buffer (abdominal fat pad). The composition of the fat-free body was not affected by dietary treatment. It was concluded that the fatfree body of pullets is a better measure of physiological age than body weight. Effects of nutrient restrictions on growth of body constituents should be presented relative to the fat-free body. Multiphasic analyses of pullet growth quantified some growth relationships between body components which had not been revealed if a simple monophasic growth approach had been used.

Protein and lipid accretion in body components of growing pigs : effects of body weight and nutrient intake
    Bikker, P. - \ 1994

In pig production, optimization of the conversion of animal feeding-stuffs into body components, especially lean meat, requires knowledge of the response relationships between nutrient intake and animal performance. In this study, the separate effects of protein and energy intake on rate and composition of body gain have been determined, in pigs with a high genetic capacity for lean tissue gain, from 20 to 45 kg. In addition, the response in body gain to energy intake has been investigated from 20 to 45 kg and from 45 to 85 kg, and the effects of body weight and previous nutrition on this response were examined. The relationship between protein intake and protein accretion was described well with a linear-plateau model, reflecting a protein and an energy dependent phase in protein deposition. The amino acid pattern of body protein was influenced by protein and energy intake. The optimal lysinelenergy ratio was not significantly affected by the level of feed intake. Protein and lipid accretion responded linearly to energy intake, both from 20 to 45 kg and from 45 to 85 kg. The increase in protein gain per unit increase in energy intake, decreased with increasing body weight. The ratio between lipid and protein deposition, and consequently body lipid content, responded curvilinearly to energy intake and increased with increasing body weight. The percentage of lean tissue decreased curvilinearly with increasing energy intake. Pigs which were restricted in energy intake from 20 to 45 kg, gained faster from 45 to 85 kg. However, this gain was largely explained by an increase in digestive tract contents and in organ gain. The percentage lean tissue at 85 kg was higher in these previously restricted pigs, but this was the result of their higher lean percentage at 45 kg, and not of a compensatory gain from 45 to 85 kg. Consequences of these results for defining an optimal feeding strategy have been discussed.
