    Fish farming is growing but is also facing challenges regarding economic viability and environmental sustainability. Selective breeding could enhance the sustainability of fish farming by changing animal performances. Thus, our aim was to develop sustainable breeding goals by using economic (EV) or environmental values (ENV) to weigh the traits to improve. EV and ENV represent the economic and environmental impacts of improving a trait. They were calculated using a bioeconomic model combined with a life cycle assessment. We showed that the EV and ENV of traits change with the factor constraining the production of the farm. It suggests that breeding goals should be finely tuned according to the limiting factor to maximize economic or environmental responses. In addition, we showed that improving feed conversion ratio is a major trait to improve because it always increases profit and decreases environmental impacts. We conclude that it is possible to develop breeding programs enhancing the sustainability of fish farming by improving the right trait in the right production system.

    This report describes a field trial that took place between 1 July and 2 October 2015 at a Dutch rose veal farm in which a group of 30 calves was fed with formula milk of which 2% of the dry matter was substituted with concentrated freshwater algae. The control group consisted of 25 calves. The farm owners collected the data, which were statistically analyzed and reported at ACRRES. During the trial the following parameters were monitored: calf weight, amounts of formula milk, water, solid feeds, feed additions and medication, deviations in manure structure, and disease incidence. Individual calf weights were determined at arrival and four weighing dates. The main conclusion of this field trial is that the addition of algae to the formula milk of rose veal calves during a period of 44 to 51 days did not have a statistically significant effect on calf weight increase up to 13 weeks after the start of the trial.

    In opdracht van PPO (PPS Kleinschalige Bioraffinage) is de in vitro verteerbaarheid van gewelde maïs en van het maïsbijproduct na fermentatie bepaald. Als referentiegrondstoffen zijn in deze studie sojaschroot en kuilgras meegenomen. Tevens is in deze studie de in vivo verteerbaarheid van het maïsbijproduct bij varkens onderzocht. Dit rapport beschrijft zowel de resultaten van het in vitro als van het in vivo onderzoek.

    A search for a viable new fish species for culture in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in the Netherlands identified yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi as having excellent potential. To assist in determining the most appropriate water quality conditions for this species in RAS, the effect of water temperature (21, 23.5, 25, 26.5 and 29 °C) and pH (6.58, 7.16 and 7.85) was tested in two separate experiments. Growth performance, feed conversion, stress-physiological and metabolic parameters were assessed in juvenile yellowtail kingfish grown in pilot-scale RAS. Growth was optimised at a water temperature of 26.5 °C, in combination with maximum food intake and optimum food conversion ratio (FCR). Increasing temperature from 21 °C to 26.5 °C resulted in a 54% increase in the fish's final weight after 30 days. A water pH of 6.58 resulted in mortality and inhibited both growth and FCR due to physiological disruptions to which the fish could not adapt

    At the Experimental Farm Raalte it was investigated whether canola protein concentrate and pea protein concentrate are suitable protein-rich feedstuffs for organically housed piglets. It is concluded that both protein concentrates are suitable protein-rich feedstuffs for piglets. Feed intake and daily gain were similar and feed conversion was better in weaned piglets that were fed diets with 8.5% pea protein concentrate or 10.0% canola protein concentrate compared to the control group.

    Koeien produceren, in tegenstelling tot kangoeroes, veel methaan. Koeien houden zonder methaan te produceren is een utopie. Onderzoekers van Wageningen UR brengen in beeld hoe de hoeveelheid methaan te bepalen is. Sinds 1990 is de methaanvorming per kilogram melk met 15 procent gedaald.

    The effect of chop length and ensiling period on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics of forage maize was studied in two experiments. In the first experiment, maize plants of eight cultivars representing different combinations of Dry Down, Stay Green, early ripening, late ripening, starch and cell wall types were chopped at harvest into pieces of 6 or 15 mm and ensiled in small laboratory silos. After 8 weeks, silage samples were taken and freeze-dried (not ground) before in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics were determined using the gas production technique. Chop length appeared not to affect the in vitro fermentation characteristics. In the second experiment, plants of two of these maize cultivars were chopped into 6-mm pieces and ensiled for different periods in small laboratory silos and in large bunker silos as used in practice. After 0, 14, 42 and 180 days of ensiling, chemical composition and in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics were determined using the gas production technique. The in vitro fermentation characteristics were not influenced by the ensiling period up to 180 days. During the first two weeks of the ensiling period sugar content decreased and so did the gas production caused by fermentation of the soluble components.
    Commercial-scale validation of temperature-step rearing on growth physiology in turbot, Scophthalmus maximus

    The aim of this study was to investigate the possible benefit of "temperature-steps" (T-steps) rearing for juvenile turbot (initial weight 15.1 g) under realistic production scale and to determine whether initial growth advantage is maintained throughout the rearing period to market size. One group (called T-step 22-19-16) of juvenile turbot was reared at three different temperatures, that is, 22 C (from 17 to 60 g) followed by 19 C (from 60 to 100 g) and 16 C (>100 g); another group (called T-step 19-16) at two temperatures, that is, 19 C (from 17 to 100 g) and lowered to 16 C (>100 g); and the third group (called C16) at one constant temperature, that is, 16 C. Relative growth was significantly higher in the two T-step groups, with the T-step 19-16 showing the highest overall growth. Feed conversion efficiency was highest in the 19-16 group. Only minor effects of the experimental rearing on blood physiology were found, with one notable exception of inverse relationship between plasma glucose and growth. Overall, these findings indicate that a short interval of rearing fish at high temperature during the early juvenile phase may have a long-term effect on biomass increment in turbot. This is an important finding for the turbot industry.

    The Effect of Low-Density Broiler Breeder Diets on Performance and Immune Status of their Offspring

    Effects of low-density broiler breeder diets on offspring performance and mortality were studied using 2,100 female and 210 male Cobb 500 breeders. Breeder treatments involved 4 experimental groups and a control group with normal density diets (ND, 2,600 kcal of AME/kg during rearing and 2,800 kcal of AME/kg during laying). In treatment 2, nutrient densities were decreased by 12% (LD12) and 11% (LD11) during the rearing and laying periods, respectively, whereas in treatment 3, nutrient densities were decreased by 23% (LD23) and 21% (LD21) during the rearing and laying periods, respectively. The nutrient density in these treatments was decreased through inclusion of palm kernel meal, wheat bran, wheat gluten feed, and sunflower seed meal in the diets. Treatment 4 included diets with the same nutrient densities as in treatment 2 but included oats and sugar beet pulp (LD12OP and LD11OP). In treatment 5, the same low-density diet was given to the breeders as in treatment 2 during the rearing period, but it was followed by a normal density diet during the laying period (LD12-ND). Treatments were applied from 4 to 60 wk of age. On low-density diets, offspring showed an increased 1-d-old weight. As compared with offspring of breeders that received ND, the d 38 live weight of chickens from 29-wk-old breeders fed LD11 was improved. Mortality was reduced in offspring from 60-wk-old parent stock given low-density diets. The IgM titers in 35-d-old offspring from eggs with a lower-than-average weight were reduced when 29-wk-old broiler breeders were fed low-density diets. In offspring from eggs with a higher-than-average weight from 60-wk-old parent stock given LD11 or LD21 diets, IgM titers were higher compared with ND. It was concluded that low-density broiler breeder diets can improve offspring growth rates, reduce mortality, and reduce or increase immune responses, depending on breeder age and egg weight.

    In toenemende mate werken (studiegroepen) melkveehouders, de veevoersector en voervoorlichters met kengetallen die een indruk geven van het voerverbruik in relatie tot de melkproductie. Soms rekent men aan de voederconversie (voerverbruik per kilogram melk), of aan de voerefficiëntie (melkproductie per kilogram droge stof). Voederconversie en voerefficiëntie zijn reeds belangrijke kengetallen in de pluimveehouderij en vleesvarkenshouderij. De voederconversie is daar een waardevol kengetal dat iets zegt over zowel de technische als bedrijfseconomische prestaties van het bedrijf. In dit rapport “De voederconversie van melkvee” komt de bruikbaarheid van de voederconversie voor de melkveehouderij aan bod. We behandelen de invloedsfactoren op de voederconversie, voergebonden kosten, beoordeling van de voederconversie in de praktijk en diverse andere aspecten. Ze zijn dan al twee jaar samen aan de slag met voederconversie, maar willen nog duidelijk een stap verder. Hun naam wijzigt dan ook in ‘Verder dan voederconversie’.     Het areaal natuurlijk grasland groeit razendsnel. Wat te doen met al dat gras? Melkveehouders zien je er mee aankomen. Een beetje is best goed voor hun melkvee, maar bij grote hoeveelheden loopt de melkproductie terug, is de heersende opvatting. Het innovatieproject ‘Natuurgras in melkveerantsoen’ toont aan dat dat niet zo is. ‘Waar het model aan voorbijgaat is dat koeien herkauwen en veel meer energie uit energiearm voer kunnen halen dan we tot nog toe veronderstellen. Het voederwaardemodel is incompleet en dus toe aan een revisie.’, zegt onderzoeker Gerard Migchels.
