    The horizontal temperature distribution in a compartment of a nursery company is monitored during a month. The temperature difference between the warmest and the coldest place averaged no more than 1 °C. The main cause of the differences laid in the heat transfer from the distribution pipes. The wind direction had no influence on the temperature distribution, probably because the compartment has no outside gables, so the wind can’t create much pressure differences. Also small screen openings did not to lead to undesirable horizontal air movements, possibly because of the relatively small area of the compartment (5000 m2).

    In this thesis the physical behavior of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL) at the capillary fringe, is studied with multiphase flow models. Phenomena like a fluctuating water table or percolation of (infiltration) water have a large impact on this behavior. Both the geometry and the mobility of the LNAPL lens are affected. These two physical phenomena mentioned imply downwards and upwards water flow through the LNAPL lens. Different techniques were used in this investigation. Numerical calculations show that fluctuations of the phreatic groundwater level result in retardation of the horizontal migration of the LNAPL lens over the groundwater level. An expression is derived which quantifies the part of the simulated time during which the LNAPL can actually flow. This expression is implemented in an existing analytical solution that describes horizontal LNAPL migration, to enable that the effect of a fluctuating water level can be calculated analytically. Laboratory experiments are performed which verify these results. The effect of water flow through an LNAPL lens also affects the mobility of LNAPL. Numerical results show that both for upwards and for downwards water invasion of a lens, the mobility of the LNAPL has increased significantly. To obtain more qualitative insight on the pore scale, percolation theory is used. Percolation theory is applied to this problem and the appropriate series of drainage and imbibition processes are calculated to simulate the water percolation. The accompanying relative permeabilities show that the mobility increases after water percolation. Qualitative insight on the pore scale shows that the LNAPL is displaced to a larger amount of pore radii which advances the mobility of the LNAPL. This observation is in agreement with the numerical results.

    In het natuurgebied "Beerzerveld" is nagegaan of er veranderingen in de schijnspiegel optreden bij een verlaging van de grondwaterstand door waterwinning. Daartoe zijn grondmonsters genomen van de kazige B-horizont in PVC cilinders en is de verzadigde doorlatendheid bepaald. Vervolgens is de flux door de kazige 8-horizont berekend. Uit de berekening van de fluxen is gebleken dat bij een grondwaterstandsverlaging van maximaal 40 cm de schijnspiegel in zowel de "droge" als "natte" gebieden vrijwel niet beïnvloed zal worden. Als grondwaterwinning wordt gecombineerd met waterinlaat uit het Overijsselsch Kanaal zal de maximale verlaging van de grondwaterstand (volgens Broksl 5-20 cm bedragen en in het gunstigste geval zal er in het oostelijk gedeelte zelfs een grondwaterstandsverhoging optreden.

    The negative value of capillary pressure (D) was defined and its practical significance considered. The results of former research on rate and final value for capillary uptake were discussed.

    The author constructed various meters for the measurement of capillary uptake. They were described and their dimensions and properties were compared with those used by other workers. The minimum and maximum values for D due to the heterogeneity of the soil material were tabulated for a series of sandy soils or soil fractions. These results were compared with those obtained in model experiments with perforated disks.

    A series of new concepts was defined, concerning the forms and properties of isolated water in the soil profile. The terms 'sejunction' and 'funicular' and 'pendular' water were discussed. Their importance was demonstrated by a series of model experiments with sand fractions of different size grades. The distribution functions for the pores of these sands were calculated and compared with the experimental results. A few calculated examples were discussed on the importance of the isolated water for aeration of soil. Conclusions were derived for the presence of cracks in the soil profile and the influence of the distribution of rainfall on the amount of available water to plants.
