    From 10 till 25 May 2016 IMARES carried out a mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey on board the FV Atlantic Lady. This survey was part of the international mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey coordinated by ICES. The Redersvereniging voor de Zeevisserij (RVZ) asked IMARES to carry out this survey. Numbers of mackerel eggs in the samples were low, lower compared to previous surveys. Most mackerel eggs were found along the 200m depth contour of the continental slope. Most of the adult mackerel had running or newly developing (in between batches) gonads. Few mackerel had gonads which were spent. Numbers of horse mackerel eggs were extremely low. A few horse mackerel eggs were found along the 200m depth contour on the most southern transects. Adult horse mackerel caught had running or newly developing gonads.

    After technical problems prevented the North Sea mackerel egg survey to be carried out in 2014, a successful survey was carried out in May-June 2015. The survey was carried out on board ‘RV Tridens’. The expected mackerel spawning area was covered in each of four periods in east-west transects, separated by 1 degree. In total 260 valid plankton hauls with a Gulf VII plankton sampler were performed, as well as 3 fish hauls and 4 sets of flowmeter calibrations hauls.

    Mackerel Scomber scombrus is a widely distributed species with a high economic and ecological importance. The North East Atlantic mackerel comprises three different spawning components. The Spawning Stock Biomass (SSB) index from the mackerel egg surveys is used as a fisheries independent tuning index for the mackerel assessment. The North Sea mackerel triennial egg survey is carried out in the year after the egg survey of the Western and Southern spawning components. Due to this time lag currently the North Sea egg survey SSB index is not used directly in the mackerel assessment. However, the egg survey is the only available information on the mackerel spawning component in the North Sea. Can the North Sea mackerel egg survey index be incorporated in the mackerel assessment and what is the impact of the incorporation of this index? Could the North Sea and Atlantic egg surveys be carried out in the same sampling year?

    In recent years the western Atlantic mackerel stock has expanded, resulting in an earlier start of spawning and earlier occurrence of the mackerel peak of spawning. In 2014 and 2015, mackerel winter spawning surveys have been conducted to determine the start date of mackerel spawning in the western area. During the surveys both plankton sampling and trawl hauls are carried out. This report contains the results of the December 2014 survey, carried out on board the Nida.

    This study aims (i) to identify the most likely population structure hypotheses of Jack mackerel, (ii) to identify management objectives for Jack mackerel, and (iii) to evaluate sustainable management strategies to achieve these objectives. These three elements were considered through literature review, statistical and population dynamics modelling. Two different conclusions were drawn: a conclusion towards most likely population structure and a conclusion towards most likely stock structure.

    As a DLS, no stock assessment has previously been adopted as a basis for advice for North Sea horse mackerel. In recent years, some explorative work on data availability for the stock has been done by the ICES Working Group on Widely Distributed Stocks (WGWIDE), and this work has been taken further in this report to produce two potential indices of stock size from the IBTS Q3 survey data. A thorough analysis of the IBTS data for North Sea horse mackerel is also presented.

    In 2013 the international Atlantic mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey was performed. This year the entire spawning area was sampled by 10 institutes from 9 different countries: Faeröer Islands, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and The Netherlands. Sampling started in February along the Portuguese coast and continued until July west of Scotland. The Dutch institute IMARES participated in the survey in May and June on board ‘RV Tridens’. IMARES covered the area of the Northern Bay of Biscay and Southern Celtic Sea once each month.

    Every three years an international North Sea survey is carried out by two European institutes, Institute for Marine Research (IMR) from Norway and Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies (IMARES) from the Netherlands, to monitor the spatial and seasonal distribution of North Sea mackerel. In 2011 the North Sea mackerel egg survey was performed. The entire spawning area was sampled by IMR, Norway and IMARES, The Netherlands. The whole spawning area was sampled three times. IMARES covered the complete sampling area in the first period, in the second period IMR covered the northern part and IMARES the southern part of the spawning area. The third period the whole spawning area was covered by IMR. In total 190 ichthyoplankton samples were taken with a Gulf VII plankton torpedo with a Seabird CTD mounted on top. Additionally, adult fish samples for the estimation of fecundity and atresia were taken using a pelagic trawl. The survey was successful and IMARES managed to sample all but 3 of the planned stations. Numbers of mackerel eggs found in the samples were comparable to 2008. Total mackerel egg production in 2011 was 116*1012 and Spawning Stock Biomass (SSB) was estimated at 165*103 tons, which is slightly higher compared to 2008. Highest egg production was found in the first sampling week and it is possible that the beginning of mackerel spawning is missed.

    Pelagic trawlers make intensive use of echosounders and therefore could potentially be used as acoustic data collection platforms. This project investigated the possibility of collecting acoustic data and its potential utility to estimate fish stock biomass. The scope of the project was to develop and - when possible - test the tools that would be necessary for large scale data collection from commercial vessels, and investigate the suitability of acoustic data to derive abundance indices.

    IMARES has been tasked to perform an ICA assessment on a simulated Jack Mackerel dataset. This in order to provide management advice within the SPRFMO framework. The results of the assessments are only briefly discussed, as the Assessment Simulation Task Team mainly focused on agreeing on the underlying simulated dataset and assessment settings during the 8th SPRFMO meeting in Auckland, New Zealand. The summarized outcome of these discussions was that more realistic characteristics of the real fishery and surveys should be incorporated into the simulated dataset. This has been communicated to the designer of the dataset and will result in a revised dataset. CVO (Centrum voor Visserij Onderzoek) has proposed to include the SPRFMO work in the near future into WOT tasks (Wettelijke Onderzoeks Taken). Early 2010 another meeting will be organized in which the Assessment Simulation Task Team will discuss the revised simulated datasets, discuss general assessment settings, perform assessments, compare and discuss these results. The results as listed in this report will be used within these discussions.

    Fish traders and NGOs have put the idea forward that in order to not disturb the spawning process and hence improve the reproductive success of a fish population one should stop fishing during the spawning period. This idea has resulted in the project “Vis & Seizoen”. Within this project a theoretical framework is being developed to examine the possible effect of fishing during the spawning season. This is the first report within the project. It presents a summary of the life history characteristics that are related to the reproduction of nine important commercial fish species.

    Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) dient als beheerder van de Noordzee en de kustwateren deskundig en adequaat te opereren bij milieucalamiteiten en rampen. Daarvoor is kennis nodig betreffende het ecologisch en economisch functioneren van de Nederlandse mariene wateren. IMARES draagt hieraan bij door te voorzien in verspreidingskaarten van de paaigebieden van enkele mariene vissoorten op het Nederlands Continentaal Plat. Het betreft de commercieel belangrijke soorten haring, kabeljauw, schelvis, wijting, makreel, schol en tong. Deze kaarten zijn gebaseerd op internationale ei-surveys, waarbij de aantallen gevangen eieren per vangstpositie geschat worden. Paaigebieden en paaiperioden zijn in hoge mate variabel, daarom worden (met uitzondering van de kaart voor haring) geen begrenzingen aangegeven in de verspreidingskaarten.

    Teneinde aan boord van trawlers in staat te zijn de grootte van makrelen of horsmakrelen te bepalen nog voordat ze gevangen kunnen worden is gebruik gemaakt van twee sonars in een bi-statische opstelling. Tijdens de experimenten is aangetoond dat deze methode zonder meer goed kan werken. Met de huidige apparatuur is het echter niet mogelijk om de groottebepaling met voldoende nauwkeurigheid uit te voeren wil ze zinvol zijn. Met nieuwere apparatuur zou dit echter wel mogelijk moeten zijn.

    This report describes the total catches of the Dutch pelagic fleet in the Mauritanian Exclusive Economic Zone during the year 2003. Data have been obtained by the 'Scientific Observer Program', which monitors the catch (both landings and discards) of the Dutch fishery for small pelagics in Mauritania. The Dutch pelagic fleet in Mauritania focuses mainly on the group of sardinella (Sardinella aurita and Sardinella maderensis). Additional target species are pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) and chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus). The landings by weight in 2003 consisted for 95% of these 4 species, S. aurita being the dominant species (58% of the landings). In the year 2003, 91.6% of the estimated total catch by weight has been landed and 8.4% was discarded, which is reasonably comparable to previous years (1999-2002). The total estimated catch of the Dutch fleet has remained about the same, approximately 170 thousand tons per year. The dominance of S. aurita in the total estimated catch has gradually diminished throughout the years 1999-2003. Pilchard (S. pilchardus) and chub mackerel (S. japonicus) gradually replaced the round sardinella in the catches of the Dutch fleet since 1999. As in previous years, the catch of round sardinella mainly took place during the summer from June to September and the pilchard S. pilchardus appeared to be the dominant species in wintertime. The number of observer days has reduced slightly throughout the period 1999-2003. Nevertheless, the sampling method, both for small pelagic species and by-catch of pelagic megafauna, has improved in quality and quantity, which resulted in high quality data. The extension of the observers’ dataset in 2003 with a fifth year in a row enlarged the possibilities to use this database for detailed research on the biology and ecology of small pelagic species in the Mauritanian Exclusive Economic Zone, which is therefore highly recommended to be performed in the near future.

    Deze handleiding dient als leidraad voor medewerkers aan het maagbemonstering programma aan boord van Europese pelagische trawlers in Mauritanië waarvan de visserij gericht is op kleine pelagische soorten zoals sardinella, makreel, horsmakreel en sardien. Het maagbemonstering programma is gestart in maart 2002 en maakt onderdeel uit van het samenwerkingsproject ‘Petits Pelagiques’ tussen het Nederlands Instituut voor Visserij Onderzoek (RIVO) en het Mauritaanse Instituut voor Oceanografisch en Visserij Onderzoek (IMROP). Dit project is begin 1998 gestart en is bedoeld om de Mauritaanse kennis ten aanzien van onderzoek aan pelagische visbestanden te versterken, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de doelsoort Sardinella aurita. De handleiding beschrijft de methodiek voor het bemonsteren van vismagen op zee, speciaal ontwikkelt voor het werk in Mauritanië, waarbij de aandacht met name gericht is op potentiële predatoren van Sardinella aurita.
    Quality assessment of a lot of frozen mackerel, respective frozen handcut mackerel fillets (Scomber scombrus)

    At the request of Van Ameyde Marine in Amsterdam, RIVO BV assessed the quality of a number of blocks of frozen mackerel and a number of blocks of frozen handcut mackerel fillets (Scomber scombrus) by means of sensorial and chemical analysis. The samples were taken from a lot, which was partial "damaged" during shiopment from Shetlandto Velsen, After discharging in Velsen the lot was sorted in a part of cartons in "good condition". According to the EC freshness scheme in general both parts of the lot of whole mackerel were qualified as being good. Based on the results of the sensorial analysis the conclusion ca be drawn that the quality of the samples of mackerel fillets varies between good and very good. In all samples of mackerel fillets the histamine content was well below rejection level.
