Using a rubric to grasp intercultural competence development in vocational education

Worldwide, educational policies increasingly focus on students’ intercultural competency development (ICD). But educational institutions struggle with its implementation due to difficulties concerning 1) explicating educational goals for ICD and 2) developing teaching, learning and assessment activities that foster this development. The paper describes the development of the Rubric ICD and two interlinked studies aimed to explore how this tool can help to explicate intercultural competence development in (higher) vocational curricula in the Netherlands. The first study, combining five teacher group interviews (n = 15), explores how the Rubric ICD helps to identify challenges and possibilities for explicitly integrating ICD in vocational curricula. The second study, involving 116 students going on international internships, examines if the Rubric ICD helps to explicate and examine students’ thinking about ICD before and after their international internships. The studies showed that ICD is still mostly implicit in vocational curricula and students’ learning. The Rubric ICD was found helpful for explicating ICD in various elements of vocational curricula and for reflecting on and coaching students’ intercultural learning. The studies also revealed that teachers’ professional development regarding ICD is needed and that the Rubric ICD could be helpful in that respect as well.

Background: Inclusive research is studied mainly in short-term collaborations between researchers with and without intellectual disabilities focusing on practicalities. Structural study of long-term collaborations can provide insight into different roles of inclusive researchers, thereby contributing to a collective approach. Method: Interviews with inclusive research team members (n = 3), colleagues (n = 8), and managers (n = 2) and three group discussions within the inclusive research team were held. Data were analysed following membership categorization analysis (MCA) adapted to the needs of the inclusive research team. Results: This MCA provides insight into the complexity of inclusive research, reflected in the multitude of identified roles and activities. Analysis indicates that researchers with and without intellectual disabilities complement each other. Conclusions: The activities identified in this study provide valuable information for discussing roles and responsibilities from the outset, so that dialogue starts at the core of inclusive research: the process between researchers with and without intellectual disabilities.

Trials have demonstrated that that the heat use for Chrysanthemum can be considerably reduced if the right measures are taken. If these reduction can also be realised with lighting, then we are well on the way to climateneutral Chrysanthemum cultivation. In order to identify energy saving measures with lighting, Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture along with growers and DLV-Plant have calculated energy savings for the most promising measures. The most important measures also appear to entail a large investment, such as ARcoatings, diffused glass, LED lighting or a super-reflecting greenhouse structure. More accessible measures, such as soil reflection (for example, styromull), can also lead to a 5% lower electricity costs. In addition, there are many small measures that are expected to increase the energy efficiency. Examples are the stage-dependent lighting regime or an extended propagation. However, it is not yet known how large the effects of these measures are and if they are also economically viable

Developing oral presentation competence is an essential objective in higher education. However, a comprehensive picture of effective learning environment characteristics for encouraging oral presentation performance is lacking hitherto. This review identifies and classifies relevant studies with the aim of deducing a set of design principles with underlying conceptual and empirical argumentations for developing this competence. Fifty-two publications from the last 20 years were selected through a systematic search in four scientific databases. Subsequently, all studies were categorized with respect to student characteristics, learning environment characteristics, learning processes and outcomes. The synthesis of these studies resulted in the formulation of seven design principles, addressing the instruction, learning and assessment sides of the learning environment. These design principles include the following learning environment characteristics: learning objectives, learning task, behaviour modelling, opportunity to practice, intensity and timing of feedback, peer assessment and self-assessment. Finally, an agenda for future research is discussed.

This paper introduces Rapid Appraisal of Agricultural Innovation Systems (RAAIS). RAAIS is a diagnostic tool that can guide the analysis of complex agricultural problems and innovation capacity of the agricultural system in which the complex agricultural problem is embedded. RAAIS focuses on the integrated analysis of different dimensions of problems (e.g. biophysical, technological, socio-cultural, economic, institutional and political), interactions across different levels (e.g. national, regional, local), and the constraints and interests of different stakeholder groups (farmers, government, researchers, etc.). Innovation capacity in the agricultural system is studied by analysing (1) constraints within the institutional, sectoral and technological subsystems of the agricultural system, and (2) the existence and performance of the agricultural innovation support system. RAAIS combines multiple qualitative and quantitative methods, and insider (stakeholders) and outsider (researchers) analyses which allow for critical triangulation and validation of the gathered data. Such an analysis can provide specific entry points for innovations to address the complex agricultural problem under study, and generic entry points for innovation related to strengthening the innovation capacity of agricultural system and the functioning of the agricultural innovation support system. The application of RAAIS to analyse parasitic weed problems in the rice sector, conducted in Tanzania and Benin, demonstrates the potential of the diagnostic tool and provides recommendations for its further development and use.

Student teachers' resistance to teacher education is often understood as a lack of quality of the student teacher and/or the internship, and is expected to impede learning. In this study we suggest that resistance is interactive in nature, and can potentially have constructive outcomes. We engaged in a crosscase analysis of the resistance of two student teachers in a year-long teacher education program. Our results draw attention to diverse ways in which student teachers can engage in resistance, and to ways in which educators can support students in exploiting their resistance to benefit their learning. Multi_stakeholder processes (MSPs) have become an important phenomena in the work of many of the Science Groups and knowledge units of Wageningen UR. To realise ‘science for impact’ it is increasingly recognized that stakeholder engagement is a critical element. Much remains to be understood about their role and effectiveness in a wider context of politics, governance and societal change. There is clearly value to be gained from the efforts of Wageningen UR wide sharing and critical reflection processes. The CD&IC programme, Wageningen International, hosted a Critical Reflection Day, building on existing and past initiatives such as Own experiences, the Transition lab and deepening of Communities of Practice of action learning and ‘Telen met Toekomst’. The Critical Reflection Day was part of the three_week international course on 'Facilitating Multi_stakeholder Processes and Social Learning' attended by some 30 participants from all over the world. They facilitated and actively took part in the Critical Reflection Day

PRI is een nieuwe ontwikkeling gestart in een tweede generatie energieleverende kassen. Doel van dit project is een technologie te ontwikkelen die het warmtedeel van de zonne-energie omzet in hoogwaardige elektrische en thermische energie. De warmtestraling wordt gereflecteerd met een speciale NIR reflecterende folie met een hoge doorlaat voor zichtbaar licht en in het bijzonder voor PAR. Deze folie reflecteert meer dan 45% nabij infrarode straling (NIR). Omdat hierdoor aanzienlijk minder warmte in de kas komt kan de kas meer gesloten blijven zonder een hoge koelbelasting. Het meer gesloten houden van de kas resulteert in een hogere CO2 concentratie bij een beperkte CO2 dosering, waardoor de groei en opbrengst toeneemt

De positieve werking van de anti-reflectielaag wordt bij een nat kasdek grotendeels tenietgedaan. De lichttransmissie is dan minder dan verwacht, maar nog steeds hoger dan bij gewoon glas. Een kasdek met dubbel AR-glas (met vierzijdig AR-laag) is net zo lichtdoorlatend als gewoon enkel glas, maar bespaart 25% energie. Deze besparing is even groot als bij kunststof kanaalplaten. De terugverdientijd van enkel AR-glasligt op 5 tot 6 jaar en voor dubbel AR-glas op 7 jaar

The relation between mechanical film properties of various adsorbed protein layers at the air/water interface and intrinsic stability of the corresponding proteins is discussed. Mechanical film properties were determined by surface deformation in shear and dilation. In shear, fracture stress, ¿f, and fracture strain, ¿f, were determined, as well as the relaxation behavior after macroscopic fracture. The dilatational measurements were performed in a Langmuir trough equipped with an infra-red reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) accessory. During compression and relaxation of the surface, the surface pressure, ¿, and adsorbed amount, ¿ (determined from the IRRAS spectra), were determined simultaneously. In addition, IRRAS spectra revealed information on conformational changes in terms of secondary structure. Possible correlations between macroscopic film properties and intrinsic stability of the proteins were determined and discussed in terms of molecular dimensions of single proteins and interfacial protein films. Molecular properties involved the area per protein molecule at ¿ ¿ 0 mN/m (A0), A0/M (M = molecular weight) and the maximum slope of the ¿-¿ curves (d¿/d¿). The differences observed in mechanical properties and relaxation behavior indicate that the behavior of a protein film subjected to large deformation may vary widely from predominantly viscous (yielding) to more elastic (fracture). This transition is also observed in gradual changes in A0/M. It appeared that in general protein layers with high A 0/M have a high ¿f and behave more fluidlike, whereas solidlike behavior is characterized by low A0/M and low ¿f. Additionally, proteins with a low A0/M value have a low adaptability in changing their conformation upon adsorption at the air/water interface. Both results support the conclusion that the hardness (internal cohesion) of protein molecules determines predominantly the mechanical behavior of adsorbed protein layers
