Most dairy farmers are not certain whether immediate insemination or delaying the insemination is the best economic decision for a cow in oestrus. A model was developed for determining, based on herd and cow characteristics, the economic consequences of immediate or delayed insemination. The model was based on literature information and expert knowledge. In the model, the oestrus detection and conception rates were made cow-specific. The utility of the model was illustrated using a standard cow and data on 90 cows in oestrus (provided by 10 Dutch dairy farmers). The model suggested that for the majority of cows, the best decision is to immediately inseminate the cow in oestrus, but for most heifers with a flatter lactation curve the best decision was to delay the insemination. The economic effect of delaying the insemination was however small, on average –€18 per cow per year. Immediate insemination of an individual cow did result in relatively low economic benefits, but for a whole herd they can be substantial. This model can be used by farmers to help making the best economic decision for a cow in oestrus.

Evaluation of feed ingredient functionality plays a vital role in modern fish feed manufacturing practice. The aim of this study was to examine the extrusion behaviour of blends containing alternative protein sources from plant origin to fish meal (FM), such as wheat gluten (WG) and soy protein concentrate (SPC), and the consequences for the physical attributes of the resulting feed extrudates. A mixture design was applied, varying the levels of protein sources included in the formulation from 50 to 450 g kg-1. Each diet was produced with added feed moisture content of 20, 26 and 32 g/100 g (wet basis). The partial least squares regression models were fitted and their performance was evaluated on the basis of R2 and the root mean squared error of cross-validation over the complete data set. A higher inclusion level of FM in the diet decreased the values of the extruder system parameters, such as torque, pressure at the die and melt temperature. In contrast, inclusion of SPC significantly increased the values of these extruder-related parameters. The viscoelastic properties of WG gave higher radial expansion; FM showed the opposite effect. The results show that the feed moisture was the dominant factor for extrudate density and oil absorption capacity. Products with higher breaking strength were observed with increasing levels of WG and SPC. Combining the product requirements for both extrudate density and hardness showed that the largest optimal compositional range is available at low feed moisture content. However, maximum FM replacement is possible at high feed moisture content

Bread and cereals contribute 30% to the daily intake of sodium (Na) in the western human diet. Since the average Na intake is double the recommended intake, pressure has built up for the food industry to lower Na in their products. Especially replacing functionality of Na as a tastant remains very difficult. In this study we describe a strategy to enhance saltiness intensity in bread using an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of Na. Our results demonstrate that sensory contrast provides a promising strategy to significantly reduce the Na content in bread without loss of saltiness intensity and without the use of sodium substitutes, taste or aroma additives.

In geologically stable areas in the tropics, climatic changes and geomorphic cycles give origin to polygenetic soils. Polygenesis involves new soil formation phases taking place on preweathered materials from previous phases, resulting in soils with rather similar chemical and mineralogical properties. Polygenetic soils from Minas Gerais, Brazil, were investigated with the purpose of distinguishing mineralogical aspects in relation to polygenesis. The soil materials were studied by micromorphology and electron microscope and analyzed by XRD. All soils are strongly weathered and even show weathered grains of ilmenite and quartz. The soils show two phases of kaolinite formation (pseudomorphs after mica and precipitation from solution) and of accumulation of iron compounds. Desilication causes gibbsite formation from kaolinite, occasionally even in the deep saprolite. Superposed processes can be due to progressively deeper weathering or to changes of the external environment

Tropical agricultural residues and their potential uses in fish feeds: the Costa Rican situation

In Costa Rica as many other tropical countries, the disposal problem of agricultural wastes is widely recognized but efforts to find solutions are not equal for different sectors. This study describes the situation of major agricultural residues in Costa Rica, identifying the activities with higher amounts produced and, the potential use of these residues in fish feeds. In Costa Rica, during the 1993¿1994 production season, major agricultural sectors (crop and livestock) generated a total amount of 3.15¿3.25 million MT of residues (classified in by-products: used residues and wastes: not used residues). Some residues are treated to turn them into valuable items or to diminish their polluting effects (e.g., the so-called by-products). About 1.56¿1.63 million MT of by-products were used for different purposes (e.g. fertilization, animal feeding, fuel, substrates in greenhouses). However, the remainder (1.59¿1.62 million MT) was discharged into environment causing pollution. About 1.07¿1.2 million MT wastes came from major crop systems (banana, coffee, sugarcane and oil palm) whereas the remainder came from animal production systems (porcine and poultry production, slaughtering). These data are further compared to residues estimates for the 2001¿2002 production season coming from the biggest crops activities. Unfortunately, most of the studied wastes contain high levels of moisture and low levels of protein, and also contain variable amounts of antinutritional factors (e.g., polyphenols, tannins, caffeine), high fibre levels and some toxic substances and pesticides. All these reasons may limit the use of these agricultural wastes for animal feeding, especially in fish feeds. The potential use of the major vegetable and animal residues in fish feeds is discussed based on their nutritional composition, on their amount available over the year and on their pollution risks. Other constraints to use these wastes in fish feeds are the extra costs of drying and, in most cases, of transportation from several dispersed locations. It was stated that most interesting wastes are rejected green banana and coffee pulp

The test ingredients in the study, from one of two key grain resources (lupins: Lupinus angustifolius and soybeans), represented various levels of processing of each grain in order to increase the protein content of the meals. A reference ingredient of enzymatically hydrolyzed casein (EHC) was also included in the study. The rainbow trout (266±18 g) were housed in freshwater tanks (250 l, salinity

This paper describes the use of a spatially explicit population model (SEPM) to investigate the effects of different forest management strategies on a red squirrel conservation area. The study was based in woodland managed by Forest Enterprise, which manages 75 000 ha of woodlands in Northumberland, Co. Durham, Tyne and Wear, and east Cumbria. The forests contain the largest remaining red squirrel populations in northern England and the area of the study, Kidland Forest, is one of five key areas or refuges where red squirrel conservation is a priority. The SEPM integrates expert knowledge on red and grey squirrels, based on 10 years of fieldwork in the area and information from the scientific literature. We investigated the current tree species composition, distribution and proposed felling plans as well as the future restocking for Kidland Forest, an area of 2050 ha of predominantly conifer species. The assessment also included a proposed planting of 15 ha of oak and its likely consequences on grey squirrel population viability. These results were then applied to develop a forest design plan to ensure red squirrel persistence over the next rotation. Results indicated that red squirrels were at risk of extinction due to a drastic reduction in the availability of suitable habitats through clear-felling. Furthermore the proposed planting of 15 ha of oak could lead to a substantial grey squirrel population at Kidland once the trees matured and assuming that grey squirrels colonize the area. The felling profile was therefore revised, allocating a proportion of the tree crop on more wind-firm sites to long-term retentions. The approach adopted at Kidland illustrates how geographical information systems, expert knowledge on the threatened species and spatially explicit models can be integrated to assist forest managers in assessing the suitability of a site for red squirrel conservation.

Trans Fatty Acids, HDL-cholesterol, and Cardiovascular Disease. Effects of Dietary Changes on Vascular Reactivity

    flow-mediated vasodilation - healthy-men - replacement - women
A high consumption of trans fatty acids increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigeted whether this increase in risk was due to the decrease in serum HDL-cholesterol by trans fatty acids, because low concentrations of serum HDL-cholesterol also increase risk of CVD. Flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) was used as an endpoint in dietary interventions that were designed to change the concentration of serum HDL-cholesterol within 4 weeks in healthy volunteers. Replacement of 10% of energy from saturated by trans fatty acids decreased serum HDL-cholesterol by 21 % and impaired FMD. However, a replacement of monounsaturated fats by carbohydrates did not impair FMD, although it decreased serum HDL-cholesterol by 13%. Acute postprandial impairments of FMD by either trans fats or saturated fats were not found, suggesting that long-term effects are responsible for the detrimental effect of trans fats on health. However, the role of serum HDL-cholesterol appears to be less than we expected.
