    Angst voor iepziekte is in veel gevallen ongegrond, want er zijn genoeg nieuwe rassen van Ulmus die deze ziekte kunnen trotseren. Dat blijkt uit lopend onderzoek. In 2010 weet PPO precies te vertellen welke rassen goed bestand zijn tegen iepziekte. Alvast een tussentijds verslag van het onderzoek, met hoopvolle bevindingen.

    The decay resistance of fully bio-derived wood plastic composites, WPCs, was tested in both laboratory and field tests. The laboratory tests were performed according to modified versions of AWPA E10 (soil-block test) and ENV 807 (tests in three un-sterile soils) and the field tests according to EN 252 (stakes in ground) and EN 275 (resistance to marine borers). The WPC materials for laboratory tests were injection molded test specimens with 50% modified wood particles and 50% cellulose ester (CAP) or poly-lactic acid (PLA) content. The field test specimens were taken from larger extruded decking board profiles with 60% wood content and 40% CAP. 60/40-mix (wt/wt) for CAP corresponds to the same volumetric composition as 70/30-mix (wt/wt) with polypropylene as matrix that was presented in Part 1 and 2. In all laboratory tests the control WPCs performed much better than the pine sapwood control blocks. The WPCs from modified wood performed better than the control WPC and WPCs from acetylated wood performed best with no detectable decay whatsoever. In the field stake test, the WPC from unmodified wood were slightly decayed whereas the WPCs from modified wood were sound. In the marine field test the WPC from unmodified wood were severely attacked by shipworm (Teredo navalis), whereas the WPCs from modified wood were sound.

    Finely ground spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst. ) was incubated with different enzyme preparations. The enzyme concentration, incubation time, temperature and buffer concentration were varied. The nature and quantity of uronic acids and neutral sugars released from the cell walls were determined. The most effective enzyme preparations were shown to be those with a broad cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic spectrum of activity. Specific pectinases were found not to be particularly effective. Sapwood and heartwood were broken down in equal degrees. Enzymatic preliminary treatment of intact spruce improved the permeability of the timber. The extent of the improvement was dependent on the enzyme preparation applied, the enzyme concentration, the incubation time, the incubation temperature and the origin of the timber. Enzymatic preliminary treatment was more effective in sapwood than in heartwood. Scanning electron microscopy made it possible to demonstrate the decomposition of the torus and the margo of the bordered pits as well as the decomposition of the pits between tracheids and parenchyma. The compression strength and the modulus of elasticity were not reduced. Preliminary treatment of intact spruce with alkali, acids and chelating agents did not result in improved permeability.

    The timber of dicotyledonous trees could not be classified on microscopic features in harmony with taxonomic practice because botanical systems were still faulty and not generally recognized, and because microscopic descriptions of timber were not uniform enough for compilation. To find whether timber features could be conformed with a botanic taxonomy, a scheme was drafted for the description of secondary wood of dicotyledonous trees based on definite, uniform and comparable characteristics.

    On this basis short descriptions were compiled of the timber of 93 species and a table was composed of species identical in microscopic structure. The 24 most important characteristics of the 42 families represented were described. Families and species were indexed.
