    Unsustainable fishing practices, including the use of non-selective fishing methods and Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, contribute to the decline of tuna fish stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). This has led to emergence of different public and private governance arrangements to foster the sustainable exploitation of tuna stocks. This thesis focuses on the performance of three innovative private incentive mechanisms: Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), International Seafood Sustainability Foundation’s Pro-active Vessel Register and eco-FADs, and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, to deliver economic incentives for improved production. The overall objective of this thesis is to evaluate the extent to which private incentive mechanisms influence Filipino fishers’ decision to improve their fishing practices.

    In order to address the overall objective, this thesis first analyses and compares the ways existing private incentive mechanisms influence the upgrading strategies of Filipino tuna fishers in the value chains (in chapter 2). Second, it evaluates the important determinants for small-scale handline fishers’ decisions to participate in two FIPs for yellowfin tuna in the Philippines (in chapter 3). Third, it examines the effect of MSC certification on the allocation of fishing days by Filipino purse seiners operating in Parties to Nauru Agreement (in chapter 4). And finally, it analyses the profitability of investments in measures needed to comply with private incentive mechanisms by Filipino purse seiners (in chapter 5).

    The findings show that overall, the incentive mechanisms are able to improve the practices of fishers, however only to a limited extent. The first two chapters (chapters 2 and 3) show that producers first need to have the capabilities to meet the requirements of private incentive mechanisms, so that they can be included in the value chain and that they can realise the incentives offered by these mechanisms. However, being capable does not guarantee that producers will improve their practices. As shown in the last two chapters (chapters 4 and 5), producers must also have the willingness to upgrade, based on their risk attitude and on the ability of the economic incentive to cover the additional costs and to compensate for the increase of the risks of participation of producers. Given that producers have the availability of capabilities to upgrade and that the benefit is sufficient to opt for participation, then producers may decide to improve their practices, which may contribute to the sustainability improvement goal of private incentive mechanisms. As a consequence of this finding, the incentives, inclusiveness, and improvements must be taken into account in both the design and implementation of private incentive mechanisms.

    This report is an update of the data and analysis on the value of the fishing activities of the Dutch, British, Danish, German, Belgian, Swedish and French fishing fleets on the proposed closed areas on the Dogger Bank. The effort, value and landings are presented for a five-year period (2010-2015) and show large variations over the last years, driven mainly by fishing opportunities for plaice for the Dutch and British fleets and sandeel for the Danish and German fleets.

Dit blijkt uit geluidtesten die de Wageningse biologiestudent Julia Samson uitvoerde. Ze schrijft erover in the Journal of Experimental Biology. De laatste jaren is er steeds meer aandacht voor ‘geluidsoverlast’ in zee.

    The potential negative effects of high levels of underwater noise on marine life have been identified and acknowledged, and this issue has been incorporated into various international agreements over the past decade. Several countries have already issued regulations to limit the incidence and level of anthropogenic noise in the oceans. The development of regulations on noise exposure in marine environments has to date focused on two groups, marine mammals and, to a lesser extent, fishes. Nevertheless, our understanding of the complexity of acoustic and behavioural effects is improving, and it might be possible to develop existing noise-exposure criteria with scientific knowledge evolving. More importantly, new regulations, or at least the approaches taken toward regulations, could be internationally harmonised to provide better protection for marine fauna.

    The metapopulation concept could provide an additional way of designating areas for protective measures in the North Sea, by delineating habitat preferences and population dynamics. The current study looks into the applicability of the metapopulation concept to the North Sea underwater environment. It also seeks out species in the North Sea that could possibly be suitable metapopulations for study. The North Sea clearly is a heterogeneous environment, but habitat characteristics, like substratum type, tend to be wide ranged and without obvious physical barriers. Processes and structures in the seascape are mainly known on a rough scale, and even at that level, the available knowledge is only an interpretation from data. The same lack of knowledge is a bottleneck in defining connectivity among subpopulations, as dispersal capabilities are unknown for the majority of marine species. The species that seems most suitable for study in a metapopulation model in this test is the grey seal. Additionally, edible crab and cod emerged as species for potential use in a metapopulation model. Neither inhabit a discrete habitat patch, but both are known to have a strategy to ensure that their offspring recruits into their own population. For species that at first seemed to suitable because they have a discrete underwater habitat patch, insufficient knowledge was available to apply the theory further.

    Plastic flessen, tassen, speelgoed, en industrieel afval. Het komt allemaal in zee en onze oceanen terecht en door stroming uiteindelijk naar de Stille Oceaan. Tien jaar geleden werd een afvalberg temidden van de grote wervelstroom ontdekt met een omvang vergelijkbaar als die van Frankrijk en Spanje tezamen. Heel langzaam vergaat het afval tot een plastic brij van miniscuul kleine snippers. Volgens deskundigen van o.a. Wageningen IMARES kunnen er meer van dit soort plekken bestaan in onze oceanen, maar dit is tot op heden nooit onderzocht. Kan zo'n afvalberg ook in de Noordzee ontstaan? Komt het in de magen van dieren als zeevissen, zeezoogdieren en zeevogels? In een Netwerk reportage, uitgezonden op 4 augustus 2008, geven wetenschappers van Wageningen IMARES antwoord op deze vragen.

    In de Voordelta wordt een zeereservaat ontwikkeld als compensatie voor het verlies aan natuur door de aanleg van de tweede maasvlakte. gepland is, het gebied waar de landaanwinning zal gebeuren, en twee referentiegebieden. In voorliggend rapport zijn ten behoeve van een evaluatie van de nulmetingen gegevens uit het verleden (1993-2004) geanalyseerd. De studie is gericht op potentiële voedselbronnen (schelpdieren) voor zee-eenden. Het voornaamste doel is om inzicht te verkrijgen in ruimtelijke en temporele gelijkenissen en verschillen tussen de referentiegebieden en gebieden in het zeereservaat

    Een methode werd ontwikkeld voor de analyse van tris(4-chloorfenyl)methanol (TCP) in organismen. Met behulp van soxhletextractie, gelpermeatiechromatografie, fractionering over silicagel en gaschromato-grafische analyse met massaspectrometrische detectie (negatieve chemische ionisatie) kan TCP in organismen bepaald worden met een recovery van 90% en een detectiegrens van 0,02 µg/kg.
