    Uit een nieuwe ruimtelijke analyse van 13 jaar Natuurkalenderwaarnemingen van bloei en bladontplooiing blijkt dat de waarnemingen betrouwbaar zijn. Ze kunnen dus goed gebruikt worden om het effect van klimaatverandering op natuur vast te leggen. Het blijkt ook dat bloei en bladontplooiing veel meer varieert tussen individuele planten van dezelfde soort in warme winters en voorjaren.
    State updating of root zone soil moisture estimates of an unsaturated zone metamodel for operational water resources management

    Combining metamodels with data assimilation schemes allows the incorporation of up-to-date information in metamodels, offering new opportunities for operational water resources management. We developed a data assimilation scheme for the unsaturated zone metamodel MetaSWAP using OpenDA, which is an open source data assimilation framework. A twin experiment showed the feasibility of applying an Ensemble Kalman filter as a data assimilation method for updating metamodels. Furthermore, we assessed the accuracy of root zone soil moisture model estimates when assimilating the regional SMAP L3 Enhanced surface soil moisture product. The model accuracy is assessed using in situ soil moisture measurements collected at 12 locations in the Twente region, the Netherlands. Although the accuracy of the model estimates does not improve in terms of correlation coefficient, the accuracy does improve in terms of Root Mean Square Error and bias. Therefore, the assimilation of surface soil moisture observations has value for updating root zone soil moisture model estimates. In addition, the accuracy of the model estimates improves on both regional and local spatial scales. The increasing availability of remotely sensed soil moisture data will lead to new possibilities for integrating metamodelling and data assimilation in operational water resources management. However, we expect that significant investments in computational capacities are necessary for effective implementation in decision-making.

    Checking the consistency of volunteered phenological observations while analysing their synchrony

    The increasing availability of volunteered geographic information (VGI) enables novel studies in many scientific domains. However, inconsistent VGI can negatively affect these studies. This paper describes a workflow that checks the consistency of Volunteered Phenological Observations (VPOs) while considering the synchrony of observations (i.e., the temporal dispersion of a phenological event). The geographic coordinates, day of the year (DOY) of the observed event, and the accumulation of daily temperature until that DOY were used to: (1) spatially group VPOs by connecting observations that are near to each other, (2) define consistency constraints, (3) check the consistency of VPOs by evaluating the defined constraints, and (4) optimize the constraints by analysing the effect of inconsistent VPOs on the synchrony models derived from the observations. This workflow was tested using VPOs collected in the Netherlands during the period 2003–2015. We found that the average percentage of inconsistent observations was low to moderate (ranging from 1% for wood anemone and pedunculate oak to 15% for cow parsley species). This indicates that volunteers provide reliable phenological information. We also found a significant correlation between the standard deviation of DOY of the observed events and the accumulation of daily temperature (with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.78 for lesser celandine, and 0.60 for pedunculate oak). This confirmed that colder days in late winter and early spring lead to synchronous flowering and leafing onsets. Our results highlighted the potential of synchrony information and geographical context for checking the consistency of phenological VGI. Other domains using VGI can adapt this geocomputational workflow to check the consistency of their data, and hence the robustness of their analyses.

    Het onderzoeksproject ‘Optimizing Water Availability with Sentinel-1 Satellites’ heeft als doel te onderzoeken hoe satellietdata gebruikt kan worden in het Nederlandse waterbeheer. Het onderzoek laat zien dat de satelliet Sentinel-1 buiten het groeiseizoen om al een vrij goed beeld geeft van het bodemvochtgehalte. Hiermee kan bijvoorbeeld de berijdbaarheid van landbouwpercelen in kaart gebracht kan worden. Ook is met Deltares en HKV een data-assimilatietool ontwikkeld die ingezet kan worden om simulaties met het Landelijk Hydrologisch Model te verbeteren.

    We have established a soil moisture profile monitoring network in the Raam region in the Netherlands. This region faces water shortages during summers and excess of water during winters and after extreme precipitation events. Water management can benefit from reliable information on the soil water availability and water storing capacity in the unsaturated zone. In situ measurements provide a direct source of information on which water managers can base their decisions. Moreover, these measurements are commonly used as a reference for the calibration and validation of soil moisture content products derived from earth observations or obtained by model simulations. Distributed over the Raam region, we have equipped 14 agricultural fields and 1 natural grass field with soil moisture and soil temperature monitoring instrumentation, consisting of Decagon 5TM sensors installed at depths of 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 cm. In total, 12 stations are located within the Raam catchment (catchment area of 223 km2), and 5 of these stations are located within the closed sub-catchment Hooge Raam (catchment area of 41 km2). Soil-specific calibration functions that have been developed for the 5TM sensors under laboratory conditions lead to an accuracy of 0.02 m3 m−3. The first set of measurements has been retrieved for the period 5 April 2016–4 April 2017. In this paper, we describe the Raam monitoring network and instrumentation, the soil-specific calibration of the sensors, the first year of measurements, and additional measurements (soil temperature, phreatic groundwater levels and meteorological data) and information (elevation, soil physical characteristics, land cover and a geohydrological model) available for performing scientific research.     The Raam soil moisture measurement network dataset contains soil moisture and soil temperature measurements for 15 locations in the Raam, which is a 223-km2 river catchment in the southeast of the Netherlands. The network monitors soil moisture in the unsaturated zone for different soil textures and land covers present in the area, and it covers the topographic gradient of the region. At each location we installed Decagon 5TM sensors at depths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm, 40 cm and 80 cm. The logging time interval is set on 15 minutes. The Raam network is operational since April 2016 and the measurements are on-going.

    Specific serum antibody responses following a Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spiralis co-infection in swine

    The aim of this study was to examine the dynamics of parasite specific antibody development in Trichinella spiralis and Toxoplasma gondii co-infections in pigs and to compare these with antibody dynamics in T. spiralis and T. gondii single infections. In this experiment, fiftyfour pigs were divided into five inoculated groups of ten animals, and one control group of four animals. Two groups were inoculated with a single dose of either T. gondii tissue cysts or T. spiralis muscle larvae, one group was inoculated simultaneously with both parasites and two groups were successively inoculated at an interval of four weeks. Specific IgG responses to the parasites were measured by ELISA. T. gondii burden was determined by MC-PCR carried out on heart muscle and T. spiralis burden by artificial digestion of diaphragm samples. Specific IgG responses to T. gondii and T. spiralis in single and simultaneously inoculated animals showed a respective T. gondii and T. spiralis inoculation effect but no significant interaction of these parasites to the development of specific antibodies with the serum dilutions used. Moreover, our data showed that the specific IgG response levels in groups of animals successively or simultaneously co-infected were independent of a respective previous or simultaneous infection with the other parasite. Additionally, no differences in parasite burden were found within groups inoculated with T. gondii and within groups inoculated with T. spiralis. Conclusively, for the infection doses tested in this experiment, the dynamics of specific antibody development does not differ between single and simultaneous or successive infection with T. gondii and T. spiralis. However, lower parasitic doses and other ratios of doses, like low-low, low-high and high-low of T. gondii and T. spiralis in co-infection, in combination with other time intervals between successive infections may have different outcomes and should therefore be studied in further detail.

    In opdracht van het Productschap Vee en Vlees hebben de Animal Sciences Group van Wageningen UR, de Faculteit Diergeneeskunde, Veterinair Centrum Someren en Intervet onderzocht of het aantal vleesvarkens met pleuritis aan de slachtlijn verminderd kan worden. Reden voor het onderzoek is de toename van het aantal vleesvarkens met pleuritis aan de slachtlijn. Het doel van het onderzoek was nagaan of door strikte toepassing van all in – all out en het niet mengen van dieren (dieren blijven van geboorte tot afleveren als toom bij elkaar) het aantal dieren met pleuritis aan de slachtlijn verminderd kan worden

    Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) has been found on pig farms worldwide and can cause myocarditis in young pigs and reproduction disorders in sows. So far, clinical signs of EMCV have not been reported in the Netherlands. The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of EMCV infection in Dutch sow herds. A total of 277 Dutch sow herds were randomly selected, from which 3237 serum samples were collected. These samples were tested for EMCV antibodies using the virus neutralization test (VN test). The apparent prevalence of EMCV antibodies was 9.3% in the total sow population, and the apparent herd prevalence was 58.8%. An exact determination of the prevalence of EMCV infections in the Dutch sow population was not possible because the characteristics of the VN test under field circumstances were not known. However, Dutch sow herds seem to be infected with EMCV because the distribution of positive blood samples in the tested sow population was significantly different from that expected if random false-positive reactions had occurred.

    In deze programmeringsstudie worden zes thema's aangedragen voor het onderzoek naar de veranderende stad-landrelaties: economische aspecten, landbouw in een verstedelijkende omgeving, nieuwe technologieën, rol van overheid en markt, nieuwe denkmodellen, planconcepten en vormgeving, en nieuwe planvormen en instrumenten. Het meest doeltreffend lijkt onderzoek op regionale schaal. De samenhang tussen deze thema's mag niet uit het oog worden verloren. De opdrachtgevers voor deze programmering (de Nationale Raad voor het Landbouwkundig Onderzoek en het Netwerk voor Onderzoek en Ontwikkeling Ruimtelijk Beleid) geven de prioriteit aan de laatste twee thema's.
