This paper describes an image obtained by applying a Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to a long time-series of satellite images: ten years of monthly images of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, a measure of the amount of green vegetation cover, for the entire South and Central America. The paper also gives a brief overview and literature references on the work done by the authors in the past five years.

Results of applying Fourier analysis of temporal NDVI in southern Africa and southern America are summarized. The decomposition of complex time series of images in simpler periodic components by Fourier analysis allowed the factors that affect the vegetation cover to be analysed much easier. The project provided the first detailed and quantitative climatology of the response of vegetation cover on the continental scale of southern Africa over a period of ten years. The more detailed studies in Argentina and Zambia gave results of practical relevance to agricultural monitoring. Numeric classification methods are improved by applying performance indices and aspects of the fuzzy-sets :theory.

This paper gives an overview of literature and of work done by the authors between 1988 and 1993. It was presented at a NATO expert meeting on sustainability of irrigated agriculture in 1994. The paper deals with crop water requirements and crop waterstress, assessing irrigation performance with satellite data, monitoring drainage conditions and salt-affected areas, distributed hydrological models of irrigation schemes, water allocation on the basis of farmers' preferences, and management issues.

A measurement of the quality of vegetation zones in dynamic terms is provided by the Fourier analysis of time series of AVHRR/NDVI monthly observations over ten years. The present approach is shown to be a powerful way to classify and extract various dynamic parameters of the vegetation in Southern Africa. The resulting map of isogrowth zones of Southern Africa was highly correlated to a radiational index of dryness or Budyko ratio, as well as to the spatial distribution of vegetation types accordingto White.

The issue of the actual practical scope of remote sensing is to some extent a matter of unfulfilled promises in the early stage of remote sensing by satellites. A detailed analysis of irrigation management procedures should always come first. Once data requirements are defined in detail, the actual scope for using satellite data can be assessed and required data products specified in detail. Since such data requirements cannot be met with satellite data only, satellite data have to be merged with other data sets and a variety of calculation procedures must be applied.
