    Flower and fruit abortion in sweet pepper in relation to source and sink strength

    Source strength (assimilate supply) and sink strength (assimilate demand) of the plant were varied in different ways to investigate to what extent flower/fruit abortion in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is determined by the availability of assimilates. Source strength was varied by changing the light level, plant density, and leaf pruning. Sink strength was varied by changing the temperature and the number and position of earlier formed fruits. Shading as well as heating for short periods showed that flowers/fruits were the most susceptible to abortion during the first week after anthesis. The different experiments where source strength was varied all showed that when source strength decreased, the rate of abortion increased linearly, whether source strength was decreased by shading, high plant density, or leaf pruning. That flower and fruit abortion not only depends on the source strength but also on the sink strength of competing organs is shown by varying the number or the position of earlier formed fruits. With the same source strength, the rate of abortion showed a close relationship with the growth rate of the earlier formed competing fruits, suggesting that the induction of abortion by earlier formed fruits is due to their sink strength. Most of the variation in abortion could be related to differences in vegetative growth rate, the latter being an indicator of the source-sink ratio. However, with the same vegetative growth rate, the rate of abortion was lower for the leaf pruning treatments where no competing fruits were retained than for the fruit load treatments. This indicates that although most of the variation in abortion can be related to the source and sink strength of the plant, some effects of competing fruits can only be explained by a combination of competition and dominance.
    Limits to nitrogen use on grassland

    Data from nitrogen (N) response experiments on grassland in Belgium and the Netherlands were analysed with the help of a descriptive crop N response model, to identify permissible doses below which no accumulation occurs of residual mineral soil N in autumn, Nmin. Using different years as separate sets, a total of 29 data sets were obtained from eight locations on various soil types. A large variation was found in Nmin base levels (unfertilised) between locations and between years at a given location. For doses low enough not to affect crop N recovery, every 100 kg N applied was associated with 3–4 kg residual Nmin in autumn. This is considered very low compared to Nmin base levels, but values differed significantly from zero. After normalising N-doses from different sources (mineral fertiliser and cattle slurry) with the help of a coefficient expressing effectiveness based on crop N uptake, no difference was found between fertiliser and slurry in terms of their effect on residual Nmin. The above also holds for nitrate leaching as measured. The sources do differ, however, with respect to long-term effects and these are quantified with a first-order approximation. It it shown that, also after incorporation of long-term effects, much higher N-doses on grassland are justified than the 170 kg N per ha per year in animal manures currently proposed by the European Commission. On normal productive cut grassland as in the analysed experiments, total N doses in cattle slurry up to 400 kg per ha per year have very little effect on residual Nmin, if not accompanied by high fertiliser doses. Introducing limits to the use of animal manures on grassland without limiting the input of mineral fertiliser-N lacks any scientific ground.

    Growth analysis of sweet pepper fruits (Capsicum annuum L.)

    Growth of individual sweet pepper fruits was measured destructively as well as non-destructively throughout their development. Moreover, the relative contributions of different fruit parts to the growth of the fruit were quantified. The length, circumference and fresh and dry weight of the fruit followed sigmoid growth curves. At 20°C the fruit reached the marketable stages for green sweet pepper at 40–45 days after anthesis (DAA), while about 20 days later the fruit turned red. After 45 DAA fresh weight hardly increased while the dry weight increased by about 20&Eth;The dry-matter percentage of the fruit decreased from 16–18 t anthesis to 6–8 t 30 DAA; thereafter it increased to 8–10&Eth;The time course of the dry-matter percentage of pericarp and placental tissue showed a pattern similar to that of the total fruit. However, during fruit development the dry-matter percentage of the seed increased to 50&Eth;The dry weight of the seeds as a fraction of the total fruit dry weight was rather constant during fruit development, but varied considerably among individual fruits (0–18Ž
