Mapping the probability of exceeding critical thresholds for cadmium concentrations in soils in the Netherlands

The probability of exceeding critical thresholds of Cd concentrations in the soil was mapped on a national scale. The critical thresholds in soil were based on food quality criteria for Cd in crops or in organs of cattle (Bos taurus), and were calculated by inverting a regression model for the Cd concentration in the crop, with the Cd concentration in soil, soil organic matter (SOM) content, clay content, and pH as predictors. The probability of exceeding the critical threshold for Cd in soil per node of a 500 m x 500 m grid was approximated by Monte Carlo simulation, using the estimated cumulative distribution functions (cdf) of SOM, clay, pH, and Cd as input. The cdfs were estimated by simple indicator kriging with local prior means. For SOM, clayand pH, detailed maps of soil type and land use were used to define subregions with assumed constant local means of the indicators (a priori distributions). The cdfs were sampled by Latin hypercube sampling. We accounted for correlation between the actual and critical Cd concentrations in soil by drawing Cd values from cdfs conditional on SOM and clay. The estimated probability for grassland is negligible, even in areas with high Cd concentrations in soil, and for maize (Zea mays L.) land the probability is almost everywhere smaller than 5%. For arable soils, however, these probabilities commonly are larger than 5% when sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) or wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is taken as a reference crop, and locally exceed 50%.

The Simulation Model for Acid Sulphate Soils (SMASS) has been developed to predict the effects of water management strategies on acidification and de-acidification in areas with acid sulphate soils. It has submodels for solute transport, chemistry, oxygen transport and pyrite oxidation. The model must be used together with the water transport model SWACROP. It combines physical and chemical processes. The output includes the acidity and chemical quality of soil and groundwater, and the occurrence of toxic compounds. This user's manual presents an outline of input and output files, guidelines for installation on a VAX-VMS computer, and the description of an application.

Het Landelijk Meetnet Bodemkwaliteit (LMB) heeft als primaire doelstelling de trendmatige veranderingen na te gaan in de kwaliteit van de bodem ten gevolge van diffuse belasting van de bodem. Het object van onderzoek is de toplaag van de bodem (0-10 cm); daarnaast wordt ook een diepere bodemlaag en het bovenste grondwater onderzocht. Het LMB wordt in samenwerking met LEI-DLO en AB-DLO uitgevoerd. Jaarlijks worden een 2-tal combinaties van bodemgebruik en grondsoort bemonsterd, bestaande uit ca. 20 locaties per combinatie. In 1993 is gestart met de bemonstering van landbouwgrond op zandgrond. Voor het bodemgebruik landbouw is het bedrijf de schaal van de locatie. De categorieen die in 1994 zijn onderzocht, zijn melkveehouderijbedrijven met een groot aandeel intensieve veehouderij op zandgrond en bos op zandgrond. Naast algemene kwaliteitsparameters zijn parameters onderzocht die gerelateerd zijn aan de milieuthema's vermesting en verspreiding. Vermestingsparameters zijn fosfaat (bodem en grondwater) , nitraat, kalium en ammonium (grondwater). Voor verspreiding zijn zware metalen onderzocht (bodem en grondwater). Voorts zijn bodemgehalten aan PAK en een aantal organochloorbestrijdingsmiddelen (OCB) bepaald.

A bromide tracer applied to a cracked clay soil was adsorbed in the soil matrix close to the soil surface. Upon subsequent precipitation, a small part of the bromide dissolved and flowed rapidly through cracks to the subsoil and the groundwater. As a result, the groundwater and the drain discharge showed considerable solute concentration peaks in the first days after application. The first drain outflow contained a bromide concentration of about 0.1% of the applied bromide solution. Subsequent precipitation events continued to cause concentration peaks in both groundwater and drain discharge.

In een zware kleigrond met sterke zwel en krimp is het transport van water en opgeloste stoffen onderzocht door een bromidetracer te spuiten op een gedraineerd graslandperceel. In de drainafvoer en het grondwater werden de bromide- en de nitraatconcentratie bepaald. Bromide en nitraat blijken overeenkomstige transportmechanismen te hebben. Er vindt preferent transport plaats via scheuren en mesoporiën, waardoor bromide en nitraat versneld uitspoelen naar het grondwater en de drainafvoer. Het transport in de bodemaggregaten gaat veel langzamer. Door de verschillen in transportsnelheid ontstaan grote concentratieverschillen in de tijd en de ruimte. Via drainafvoer komen aanzienlijke hoeveelheden nitraat in het oppervlaktewater terecht.

The transport of a bromide tracer was studied in a cracking heavy clay soil. The soil was sampled six times and the groundwater and drain discharge were sampled frequently. Samples were analysed for bromide content. Solutes were transported in three domains: macropores, such as large continuous shrinkage cracks, with rapid transport of water and solutes through the unsaturated zone; smaller, more tortuous mesopores, which are quantitatively the most important, with lateral and vertical transport through the soil between the large macropores; micropores in the soil aggregates, which play only an indirect role in transport through solute retardation.

A method is presented to asses the contamination risk of aquifers covered with cracking clay soils, with special emphasis on preferential flow through shrinkage cracks. A water extraction area was divided into units with homogeneous soil types and hydrological conditions. For each unit, a one-dimensional computer simulation model was used to compute residence times in the unsaturated zone of the clay soils. Analytical equations were used to estimate residence times in the saturated zone. Finally, a classification system is proposed to visualize the model computations. The method developed is illustrated by a case-study.

Nitrate leaching from agricultural soils has frequently led to concentrations above the EU drinking-water standard. Most data originate from sandy soils. In this experiment the mechanism and magnitude of nitrate leaching from grassland on a heavy claysoil were investigated. In an experimental field, nitrogen input and nitrate output were measured. A bromide tracer was applied to study solute transport mechanisms. Nitrate transport occurred mainly via preferential flow through mesopores and macroporesresulting in small mobile-water volumes and high nitrate-leaching rates. Nitrate concentrations in the drain discharge were high. Models cannot adequately predict nitrate leaching in heavy clay soils.

The mechanism and magnitude of nitrate leaching from grassland on a heavy clay soil were investigated by measuring nitrogen input, and nitrate concentrations in groundwater and drain discharge for two years. A bromide tracer was applied to study solute transport mechanisms. Nitrate transport in the heavy clay soil mainly occurred via preferential flow through mesopores and macropores, resulting in low mobile-water volumes and high nitrate-leaching rates. Nitrate concentrations in the drain discharge were high. The present generation of computer simulation models for nitrogen transport and behaviour in soils cannot adequately predict nitrate leaching in heavy clay soils.

The transport of a bromide tracer was studied in a heavy clay soil in six soil sampling campaigns. Water samples were taken frequently from the groundwater and drain discharge and analysed for bromide content. Solutes were transported in three domains: large continuous macropores, smaller tortuous mesopores, and the pores between the soil aggregates. The most important transport occurred through the mesopores, characterized by high spatial variability, significant lateral transport, and low mobile water volumes. This resulted in rapid leaching of solute. Preferential flow through large macropores amounted only to a few per cent. Interaggregate solute transport played only an indirect role via solute retardation.

Om de nitraatuitspoeling uit een kleigrond onder grasland te kwantificeren werd gedurende 600 dagen de stikstofbemesting geregistreerd en werd de nitraatconcentratie in het grondwater en in de drainafvoer regelmatig gemeten. Met een bromide-tracer werden het mechanisme en de snelheid van het stoffentransport vastgesteld. Preferente stroming leidt in kleigronden tot een zeer snel transport van stoffen naar grondwater, drains en oppervlaktewater. De gemeten nitraatconcentraties waren meestal zeer hoog,ruim boven de EU-drinkwaternorm van 50 mg/l. Grasland op zware klei is zeer gevoelig voor nitraatuitspoeling en het grootste deel van het uitgespoelde nitraat komt via de drains in het oppervlaktewater terecht.

Reclamation and drainage of potential acid sulphate soils results in acidification and release of toxic elements, hampering their use for agriculture. Ecologically valuable habitats located downstream of reclamation areas may be disrupted. Proper water management is essential to a sustainable reclamation of these soils. The Simulation Model for Acid Sulphate Soils (SMASS) has been developed to predict the effects of water management on soil and water quality. A case-study in the Barambai area in Indonesia, for which six water management strategies were evaluated, illustrates how SMASS can be applied to make a scientifically based evaluation of water management strategies.
