    Aim: Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change. Location: Tropical and subtropical moist forests. Time period: Current. Major taxa studied: Palms (Arecaceae). Methods: We assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191 ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., ≥10 cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to co-occurring non-palm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure. Results: On average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of long-term climate stability. Life-form diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many non-tree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of above-ground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work. Conclusions: Tree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests.

    Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern. Our approach helps to better understand the relationship of WTs on the seasonal and spatial variability of rainfall, runoff and sediment yield with a regional scale based on the large dataset and number of soil erosion experimental stations.

    Differential responses to salt stress in ion dynamics, growth and seed yield of European quinoa varieties

    Quinoa is a nutritious seed crop with a great potential to grow in saline soils. Here, we studied ion concentrations in quinoa tissues throughout the life cycle of the plant, and linked ion dynamics to responses in growth parameters, seed yield and efficiency of photosynthesis under salinity (0–400 mM NaCl). Ion dynamics changed from high ion exclusion (>99 %, root contents lower than root medium and low accumulation of ions in the leaves) before flowering, to a build-up of ions during seed filling. This indicates a change in strategy in maintaining the necessary gradient of water potential from the root medium to the leaves. K+ concentrations in leaves also increased by more than 100 % in response to prolonged severe salt stress, which may point to a role of this ion in leaf osmotic adjustment. Accumulation of ions in epidermal bladder cells did not contribute substantially to Na+-exclusion as it was less than 6 % of the total Na+ taken up in leaves. Growth under salt stress was mostly impaired by anatomical adaptations (reduced SLA), while initial light use efficiency (Fv/Fm) and NAR were not affected. The variety Pasto showed a “survival strategy” to high salinity with higher ion exclusion and a higher reduction in transpiration than the other varieties, at the expense of lower biomass and seed yield.

    The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (-9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. To realize the long-term climate adaptation potential of tropical forests requires both protecting them and stabilizing Earth's climate.

    Sequence analysis of Ricinus communis small heat-shock protein (sHSP) subfamily and its role in abiotic stress responses

    Small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) possess major roles in plant defense mechanisms towards abiotic stresses. sHSPs act as molecular chaperones providing the necessary tools to sustain cellular homeostasis under adverse conditions. sHSP genes display specific expression signatures, which depend on tissue-specificity, developmental stage and the nature of the abiotic stress. Despite the fact that Ricinus communis is an important oilseed crop with large socioeconomic impact on small family farmers in semi-arid regions worldwide, the characterization of RcsHSP genes and their possible contribution to plant survival under harsh environmental conditions has not been addressed. Hence, this study aimed at characterizing the R. communis sHSP subfamily, through phylogeny, gene structure, duplication, and expression profile analysis, as well as by characterizing Arabidopsis thaliana seeds overexpressing RcsHSP genes. We identified 41 RcsHSP genes with the α-crystallin domain and compatible molecular weight (<43 kDa). The RcsHSP subfamily showed different homology levels with sHSP genes from other plant species, suggesting the occurrence of specific gene expansion and loss. The RcsHSP subfamily was classified according to the cellular locations of the genes, which included cytosolic, chloroplastic, mitochondrial, and endoplasmic reticulum groups. Ten putative motifs were found among RcsHSP genes, but only motifs 4, 6 and 8 were sHSP protein domains. The RcsHSP subfamily showed 19 genes produced by tandem duplication events, which might have been crucial for RcsHSP diversification and acquisition of tolerance in R. communis. Gene expression analysis showed that the RcsHSP subfamily possesses different regulatory mechanisms in response to various abiotic stresses. Additionally, overexpression of RcsHSP genes in A. thaliana was followed by enhanced SOD activity and higher content of osmoprotectants, which ultimately led to enhanced seed germination under a variety of abiotic stresses. Our results may contribute to breeding programs aiming at developing high tolerant R. communis plants, providing economic and social support for farmers in semiarid areas worldwide.

    As the most abundant animals on earth, nematodes are a dominant component of the soil community. They play critical roles in regulating biogeochemical cycles and vegetation dynamics within and across landscapes and are an indicator of soil biological activity. Here, we present a comprehensive global dataset of soil nematode abundance and functional group composition. This dataset includes 6,825 georeferenced soil samples from all continents and biomes. For geospatial mapping purposes these samples are aggregated into 1,933 unique 1-km pixels, each of which is linked to 73 global environmental covariate data layers. Altogether, this dataset can help to gain insight into the spatial distribution patterns of soil nematode abundance and community composition, and the environmental drivers shaping these patterns.

    The global scientific research response to the public health emergency of Zika virus infection

    Background Science studies have been a field of research for different knowledge areas, and they have been successfully used to analyse the construction of scientific knowledge, practice and dissemination. In this study, we aimed to verify how the Zika epidemic has moulded the scientific articles published worldwide by analysing international collaborations and the knowledge landscape through time, as well as research topics and country involvement. Methodology We searched the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and PubMed for studies published up to 31st December 2018 on Zika using the search terms “zika”, “zkv” or “zikv”. We analysed the scientific production regarding which countries have published the most, on which topics, as well as country level collaboration. We performed a scientometric analysis of research on Zika focusing on knowledge mapping and the scientific research path over time and space. Findings We found two well defined research areas divided into three subtopics accounting for six clusters. With regard to country analysis, the USA and Brazil were the countries with the highest numbers of publications on Zika. China entered as a new player focusing on specific research areas. When we took into consideration the epidemics and reported cases, Brazil and France were the leading research countries on related topics. As for international collaboration, the USA followed by England and France stand out as the main hubs. The research areas most published included public health-related topics from 2015 until the very beginning of 2016, followed by an increase in topics related to the clinical aspects of the disease in 2016 and the emergence of laboratory research in 2017/2018. Conclusions Mapping the response to Zika, a public health emergency, demonstrated a clear pattern of the participation of countries in the scientific advances. The pattern of knowledge production found in this study represented varying country perspectives, research capacity and interests based first on their level of exposure to the epidemic and second on their financial positions regarding science.

    People depend on nature in multiple ways and there is increasing concern about how the current unsustainable use of natural resources will compromise human well-being. In this context, there is a debate about the usefulness of the terms ecosystem services (ES) and nature's contributions to people (NCP) in addressing this problem, but so far no research has been dedicated to investigating the reasons behind this. We, therefore, performed a data-based study to explore the potential explanations for the use and perceptions of the differences between the ES and NCP terms. Based on a questionnaire among 150 participants in the ESP Latin America and the Caribbean conference in 2018, we demonstrate that the choice for using one or both terms is related to the perception of the differences between them and to specific professional traits. We detected that researchers that use quantitative methods are predominantly inclined to use ES while researchers using qualitative methods use the NCP-term. Despite the predominant preference for one of the two terms, a considerable percentage of researchers used both. Our results suggest that rather than emphasizing perceived conflicts between ES and NCP terms, they can be used in a complementary way and have the potential to reach multiple audiences.

    Ricinus communis L. seeds can germinate at high temperatures, but further development of the seedlings is negatively affected. This mainly caused by impairment of energy-generating pathways when seeds are germinated at 35 °C. Ricinus communis malate synthase (RcMLS) is a key responsive gene in lipid mobilization and gluconeogenesis and as such might have a role in sustaining successful seed germination and seedling growth. Herein, we raised the question whether RcMLS might be involved in the biochemical and molecular mechanisms required for R. communis seed germination under unfavourable environmental conditions. For that, we used a robust approach that encompassed bioinformatics analysis, transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh seeds overexpressing RcMLS, along with phenotypical characterization of seed germination under abiotic stress. The phylogenetic tree revealed important evolutionary relationship amongst MLS sequences from R. communis and from other crop species/model plants. Overexpression of RcMLS enhanced A. thaliana seed germination under high temperature and salt stress. For example, wild-type A. thaliana Columbia seeds (Col-0) showed 37 % of maximum germination at 35 °C, whereas A. thaliana seeds overexpressing RcMLS showed up to 71%. When salt stress was applied (75 mM NaCl), maximum germination of Col-0 seeds reached 37%, whereas for A. thaliana seeds overexpressing RcMLS it reached up to 93%. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Gas Chromatography coupled to Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) metabolomics analysis showed a robust metabolic signature of A. thaliana seeds overexpressing RcMLS in response to abiotic stress. They accumulated high levels of Met, Ile, fructose, glucose, and sucrose. Therefore, we suggested that overexpression of RcMLS has modulated the glyoxylate cycle and gluconeogenesis pathway in order to maintain cellular homeostasis under unfavorable environmental conditions. Our results provide important leads into the contribution of RcMLS to the underlying mechanism of R. communis seed germination under adverse environmental conditions. This might be helpful for breeding programs to develop more resistant R. communis cultivars which are more likely to sustain growth and high yield under the severe conditions found in arid and semi-arid areas worldwide.

    The use of functional information in the form of species traits plays an important role in explaining biodiversity patterns and responses to environmental changes. Although relationships between species composition, their traits, and the environment have been extensively studied on a case-by-case basis, results are variable, and it remains unclear how generalizable these relationships are across ecosystems, taxa and spatial scales. To address this gap, we collated 80 datasets from trait-based studies into a global database for metaCommunity Ecology: Species, Traits, Environment and Space; “CESTES”. Each dataset includes four matrices: species community abundances or presences/absences across multiple sites, species trait information, environmental variables and spatial coordinates of the sampling sites. The CESTES database is a live database: it will be maintained and expanded in the future as new datasets become available. By its harmonized structure, and the diversity of ecosystem types, taxonomic groups, and spatial scales it covers, the CESTES database provides an important opportunity for synthetic trait-based research in community ecology.

    Commoning Xela: Negotiating collective spaces around a Central American intermediate city

    This exploration is based on joint fieldwork conducted by an interdisciplinary research team in the city of Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala. It uses the notion of commoning as an analytic lens to understand social transformations in this intermediate city, and in contemporary Latin America at large. The interplay of commoning, de-commoning and re-commoning processes draws attention to the cocreation and collective production of tangible and intangible resources happening at different scales. The proposed commoning perspective further aims to critically assess the binary contrasts and presumed dualisms that inform academic and policy approaches to social change, in order to create a better understanding of the drivers, interactions and practices of transformation in intertwined rural-urban contexts.

    Higher levels of taxonomic and evolutionary diversity are expected to maximize ecosystem function, yet their relative importance in driving variation in ecosystem function at large scales in diverse forests is unknown. Using 90 inventory plots across intact, lowland, terra firme, Amazonian forests and a new phylogeny including 526 angiosperm genera, we investigated the association between taxonomic and evolutionary metrics of diversity and two key measures of ecosystem function: aboveground wood productivity and biomass storage. While taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity were not important predictors of variation in biomass, both emerged as independent predictors of wood productivity. Amazon forests that contain greater evolutionary diversity and a higher proportion of rare species have higher productivity. While climatic and edaphic variables are together the strongest predictors of productivity, our results show that the evolutionary diversity of tree species in diverse forest stands also influences productivity. As our models accounted for wood density and tree size, they also suggest that additional, unstudied, evolutionarily correlated traits have significant effects on ecosystem function in tropical forests. Overall, our pan-Amazonian analysis shows that greater phylogenetic diversity translates into higher levels of ecosystem function: tropical forest communities with more distantly related taxa have greater wood productivity.

    The life cycle of a seed plant involves subsequent stages of development including germination and seedling establishment. Morphological structures have a fundamental role in these phases, since they are strongly related to physiological adaptations to survival in a range of environments. The present study describes an important morphophysiological and anatomical pattern in embryos of Jatropha genus, involving adaptations for germination and seedling growth. Seed embryos of Jatropha curcas, J. gossypiifolia, J. podagrica and J. multifida were examined using different physiological and microscopic assays. Jatropha species present a multimeristematic embryo composed of one main apical primary meristem plus four radial primary meristems. Seed germination is completed by simultaneous protrusion of five functional roots and seedlings are able to survive even with only one of them. The hypocotyl-radicle transition zone exhibiting different stomata sizes, ontogenic phases and short lifespan limited to the germination. Stomata fractures at mid-region due to the fact that guard cells were not lengthen as neighboring epidermal cells, forming a large cavity in the epidermal tissue during seedling growth. The results showed an unusual and complex root structure for the Jatropha genus. The presence of stomata operating strictly during seed germination could be associated to intense energetic metabolism demanded for the simultaneous growth of the five roots originated from the multimeristematic radicle. This study provides important insights into the understanding of seed germination of Jatropha species in response to stress environmental conditions.

    Convergent xylem widening among organs across diverse woody seedlings

    Xylem conduit diameter (D max ) of woody angiosperm adults scales with plant size and widens from the stem apex downwards. We hypothesized that, notwithstanding relative growth rate (RGR), growth form or leaf habit, woody seedling conduit D max scales linearly with plant size across species; this scaling should be applicable to all vegetative organs, with consistent conduit widening from leaf via stem to main root and coupling with whole-leaf area and whole-stem xylem area. To test these hypotheses, organ-specific xylem anatomy traits and size-related traits in laboratory-grown seedlings were analyzed across 55 woody European species from cool-temperate and Mediterranean climates. As hypothesized, conduit D max of each organ showed similar scaling with plant size and consistent basipetal widening from the leaf midvein via the stem to the main root across species, independently of growth form, RGR and leaf habit. We also found a strong correlation between D max and average leaf area, and between stem xylem area and whole-plant leaf area. We conclude that seedlings of ecologically wide-ranging woody species converge in their allometric scaling of conduit diameters within and across plant organs. These relationships will contribute to modeling of water transport in woody vegetation that accounts for the whole life history from the trees’ regeneration phase to adulthood.

    The toll-like receptors involved in recognition of the exopolysaccharide produced by two isogenic, ropy and non-ropy, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains were investigated. Both strains interact with human embryonic kidney (HEK)-293 cells via TLR2, whereas purified EPSs specifically stimulate TLR4 regardless their molar mass.

    Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have become increasingly dominated by large-statured taxa, but to date there has been no detectable change in mean wood density or water deficit affiliation at the community level, despite most forest plots having experienced an intensification of the dry season. However, among newly recruited trees, dry-affiliated genera have become more abundant, while the mortality of wet-affiliated genera has increased in those plots where the dry season has intensified most. Thus, a slow shift to a more dry-affiliated Amazonia is underway, with changes in compositional dynamics (recruits and mortality) consistent with climate-change drivers, but yet to significantly impact whole-community composition. The Amazon observational record suggests that the increase in atmospheric CO2 is driving a shift within tree communities to large-statured species and that climate changes to date will impact forest composition, but long generation times of tropical trees mean that biodiversity change is lagging behind climate change.

    Transcriptome profiling of Ricinus communis L. provides new insights underlying the mechanisms towards thermotolerance during seed imbibition and germination

    Ricinus communis seeds germinate to a high percentage and faster at 35 °C than at lower temperatures, but with compromised seedling establishment and survival. However, seedlings are able to cope with high temperatures at later stages of seedling establishment if germination occurred at lower temperatures. The identification of this thermo-sensitive window during seed germination suggests that temperature disturb crucial mechanisms that support seedling establishment. We studied the molecular mechanisms that could explain this thermo-sensitive window with a genomics approach using microarray analysis to determine transcriptome changes during seed germination at 20, 25 and 35 °C. Although temperature had a strong effect on the R. communis transcriptome, most of these differences occurred between 6 h of imbibition and the commencement of germination, i.e. radicle protrusion, which coincided with the identified thermo-sensitive window. We identified several responsive genes that might be involved in the thermotolerance of R. communis. Temperature had a major effect on genes involved in energy generating pathways, such as the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, gluconeogenesis, and starch- and triacylglycerol degradation. Transcripts of ATP binding proteins, DNA binding proteins, RNA binding proteins, DNA-directed RNA polymerases, heat shock factor proteins, multiprotein-bridging factor proteins, and zinc finger proteins were also affected by temperature suggesting that transcriptional reprogramming mechanisms were disturbed. Among the downregulated transcripts, three were shared by all three stages: one oxidation-related zinc finger 2, one F-box and wd40 domain protein, and one DNA binding protein/ MYB-like transcription factor. Among the upregulated transcripts, nine were shared by all three stages: one BET1P/SFT1P-like protein 14BB, one low-molecular-weight cysteine-rich protein LCR78, one WD-repeat protein, one GAST1 protein, one adenylate kinase 1/P-loop containing nucleoside triphosphate hydrolases superfamily protein, and four conserved hypothetical proteins. These genes constitute good candidate genes for further characterization of temperature-responsive molecular mechanisms in R. communis, which in turn will provide necessary tools for the exploitation of R. communis by small family farmers under the typical harsh conditions of semiarid regions worldwide.
