Carryover of cadmium from feed in growing pigs

Growing male pigs were exposed to cadmium (Cd) at levels around 1 and 10 mg kg–1 feed for up to 12 weeks, administered as CdCl2 or Cd-cysteine (CdCys). Pigs exposed to 10 mg kg–1 showed decreased growth during the last 3 weeks. Liver and kidney concentrations of Cd continuously increased over the entire 12-week exposure, exceeding the European Union limits of 1.0 mg kg–1 (kidney) and 0.5 mg kg–1 (liver) within 3 weeks at the feed level of 10 mg kg–1. A switch to clean feed after 3 weeks for 5 or 9 weeks resulted in steadily decreased levels in kidney and liver, which could be completely attributed to organ growth. At the lower feed level, the level in kidney exceeded the limit almost twofold after 12 weeks, but not after 3 weeks. Liver levels remained below the limit. Metallothionein (MT) levels in livers showed a steady decrease in both untreated and treated animals over time. In kidney such a decrease was only observed in control animals, whereas in the highest-dosed animals the MT concentrations steadily increased. The observed carryover of Cd from feed to liver and kidney was modelled by means of a simple transfer model relating levels in feed via MT levels to accumulation of Cd. Using this model, it was shown that the exposure period of growing pigs to feed containing the European Union limit of 0.5 mg kg–1 feed should be less than 12 weeks in order to prevent Cd levels in the kidneys to exceed the European Union limit.

In a short literature review, we have collected available knowledge on the potential benefits of urban agriculture, as part of local food systems, on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The effects of urban agriculture on climate change mitigation and adaptation depend on the type of agricultural practice (e.g. in greenhouses, in soil, in artificial substrates used resources) and the difference with previous land use (e.g. leading to an increase or decrease of sealed soil surface and green areas). Specific types of urban agriculture can alter the urban environment and in this way influence climate adaptation, or contribute to mitigation in case the production can be realized with lower energy inputs due to opportunities offered by the urban system.

This paper describes the analysis of a real case of multiple Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems. The Hague, the capital city of the province of South Holland in the Netherlands, is densely populated with many ATES systems. A total of 19 ATES systems are installed in an area of 3.8 km(2) with a total of 76 functioning wells. The analysis focuses on the development of a coupled groundwater flow and heat transfer model over a period of 10 years. Results are then post-processed to evaluate efficiency of each individual well and system. Efficiency of the ATES systems has ranged between 68% and 87%. The analysis showed that efficiency tends, in general, to increase over time and stabilize at an asymptotic value after few years. Analysis of interference among individual wells of an ATES system and wells of other systems showed that interference could, in fact, have a positive impact on the efficiency of a well/system. Interference can increase efficiency of an ATES system since it can help in trapping energy (cold or warm) within the capture zone of all operating ATES systems. In the study area, the interference phenomenon affects efficiency, in general, positively where it increases the efficiency of individually operating wells by a maximum of 20%. However, the phenomenon also affects efficiency of some wells negatively where it reduces the efficiency of individually operating wells by a maximum of 25%. In average, systems in the study area are positively affected by interferences among each other with an overall average of 3.2% for all wells (over the 10 years operation period). Study Design. Prospective cohort study. Objective. We explored long-term associations between physical load exposure and chronic low back pain (LBP) using data from an ongoing population-based cohort study. Summary of Background Data. Physical load in work or daily life is often studied in relation to LBP. Most studies are cross-sectional or have a limited follow-up. Methods. Between 1993 and 2007, 4738 men and women aged 25 to 64 years were measured maximal 3 times with 5-year intervals. Physical load in daily activities (9 items, e. g., awkward postures, mechanical vibration) was assessed by questionnaire at 2 measurements and chronic LBP 3 times. Physical load exposure at both measurements was described. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were adjusted for sex, age, education, work status, body mass index, physical activity, and smoking. Results. Despite stable prevalence rates of physical load exposure, about 50% of the participants exposed changed their exposure during a 5-year period. 7.2% of the participants reported awkward postures at 2 measurements, 8.4% at the first measurement only, and 6.8% at the second measurement only. Among all physical load variables, associations with chronic LBP were found only for awkward postures. An increased risk for incident chronic LBP was found in participants exposed twice to awkward postures. In contrast, only single exposure to awkward postures was associated with persistence of chronic LBP. Conclusion. Awkward postures were associated with chronic LBP in the general population. Exposure to awkward postures at 2 measurements with 5 years in between did increase the risk for incident chronic LBP, but not for persistence of chronic LBP.

familial combined hyperlipidemia - density-lipoprotein cholesterol - postprandial lipemia - interventions - metaanalysis - management - profiles - efficacy - validity - sterols
Background Plant stanols have been recommended in combination with individualized dietary interventions to reduce plasma cholesterol concentrations. It is unclear whether plant stanols in combination with dietary guidance in patients already using optimal doses of statins will further reduce fasting and postprandial lipids compared with standard care. Study design This single-blind, randomized study investigated the effect of plant stanols in margarines, combined with a lipid-lowering dietary intervention, in patients already on lipid-lowering medications at maximal doses not reaching their target lipid levels. Nutrition education was based on the stages of change theory. The control group (which served as the standard care control group) was also taking optimal doses of statins. This group received a margarine without plant stanols and a leaflet with Dutch nutrition guidelines. Fasting lipids were measured once in venous samples and postprandial lipemia was assessed by self-measured triglycerides in an outpatient setting. All subjects were given a capillary triglyceride measuring device (Accutrend GCT, Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany) and were instructed to measure their capillary triglycerides at six fixed timepoints throughout the day on three different days. The mean area under the triglyceride curve represented total daylong triglyceridemia, which has been shown to reflect postprandial triglyceridemia. Twenty patients were included, 11 in the intervention group and 9 in the control group. Results In the plant stanol group, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased significantly by 15.6% ompared with a reduction of only 7.7% in the control group. The daylong triglyceridemia was similar in both groups at the beginning and at the end of the study, and no change was observed by the intervention. Conclusion Intensive dietary intervention with addition of plant stanols results in clinically relevant reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients optimally treated with statins, compared with similar patients on statins receiving only standard care. The use of a plant stanol-enriched margarine did not decrease postprandial triglyceridemia in these patients

In The Netherlands a large quantity of domestic, agricultural and industrial organic wastes is produced. After purification or composting processes these substances can be partly re-used as organic fertilisers on the condition that this does not lead to contamination of the environment. In the so called Dutch regulation "Besluit kwaliteit en gebruik Overige Organische Meststoffen" (BOOM) (1) sewage sludge, compost and soil are considered as organic fertilisers. For these fertilisers the regulation sets maximum residue limits for the heavy metals cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, lead, nickel, zinc and arsenic. By BOOM, normalised methods (NEN) are prescribed for the determination of these elements. RIKILT organised as supervisor of the regulation BOOM an interlaboratory study to check the performance of the laboratories involved in BOOM analysis
