Judging bibliographic references - Introduction

A search in a bibliographic database or library catalogue will result in a list of bibliographic references or citations. To make a good selection from such a list, which can be long, you must be able to evaluate these records, and thereby the documents they represent. The main question you should put yourself is whether the content of the document is appropriate for your research topic or assignment. Is it worth the effort of getting the full text and reading it?
