Abstract

A general discussion with a bibliography of recent literature. A reappraisal of earlier studies in Europe suggests that the dieback of 2nd-rotation coniferous plantations on poor soils was due to intensive site preparation leading to losses of soil organic matter. Afforestation, which generally increases site fertility, can be preceded by complete soil cultivation without ill effect. A strategy is proposed for silvicultural management according to the stage of ecological development of forest ecosystems. A methodology is also proposed for determining the impact of individual species on soil productivity. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
