Abstract

The quantitative effects of the patchy distribution of Sitobion avenae on its relationship with the parasite Aphidius rhopalosiphi were studied using a simulation model. The model computations were compared with field data obtained in the Netherlands. Various hypotheses on the parasite-host relationship were tested. The functional response and aggregation of the parasites showed that clustering increases the effect of parasites on the population development of S. avenae, but the parasite does not prevent population upsurge even when it shows clear aggregation to host clusters.
