Abstract

Transport of glasshouse crops by conveyor belts and rail systems is discussed and examples are described of specialized forms of the 2 systems on commercial holdings producing ornamental and vegetable crops. The capital and annual costs of rail systems are relatively low. Such systems are more suited than conveyor belts to crops that need to be harvested over a period and they can be used both for harvesting and cultural operations. The advantages of the 2 systems over traditional means of transport are discussed. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
