Abstract

A theoretical model is used to represent the economic development of family rice-farming in Surinam. Analysis of the possible causes underlying the transformation from traditional to commercial enterprises suggests: (1) the human factor, and (2) techno-economie factors are mainly responsible for the presence of various stages of development. The paper further examines peasant rice-production in Surinam, the economic structure of rice farming in transformation, cost of rice production, and factors affecting the transformation. E. A.
