Abstract

The emergence rhythm of leaves on the main axis was shown to be a heritable character in Zelder. This rhythm, which is correlated with leaf size, may be the same before and after ear initiation, or different. By selection, four different rhythms were obtained; a low rhythm before and after ear initiation resulted in shorter straw and more rapid ear emergence.
