Abstract

The presence of typical podzols and podzolic soils in hot, humid tropical lowlands is discussed. The podzolic soils are part of a hydrological sequence; clay migration occurs in them and the thickness of the B2 horizon is only 40 cm, whereas in Pleistocene marine soils at greater altitudes breaking-down of the clay minerals occurs and the B2 horizon commonly exceeds 100 cm in thickness.
