Abstract

Two heifers and 1 lactating cow received rations containing 2.7-5.3 g. Na/head/day +or- supplements of about 40 g. Na/head/day. The Na content of the total faeces, faecal juice and urine were lower and K content higher during periods when low Na rations were fed; there was also a small but significant decrease in Na content of milk for the cow fed low Na rations. It was concluded that, in addition to the kidneys, the gut was also important in the Na metabolism of cows on low Na rations. M.P.H. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
