Abstract

A shallow clay layer overlying sandy subsoil is very susceptible to drought. Since no roots penetrate the subsoil the crop gets moisture from the clay or from the sand by capillarity. Deep plowing gives complete improvement when spring water tables are at depths of <100 cm. With deeper water tables, deep plowing and sub-irrigation to 100 cm are necessary. For soils with a clay cover of 30 cm sub-irrigation to about 100 cm during March, together with deep plowing to 60 cm are recommended. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)
