Abstract

A partly historical description of agricultural production in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate zones leads to the conclusion that fanners in the latter zones were in a better position to produce marketable surpluses than the inhabitants of the former regions. Western economic influence in less developed regions was confined mainly to estate management and to the extractive industries. The factors which influence economic development are discussed and it is concluded that western countries can and must assist in this development. R.v.H.
