The origin of this variety is England and it is mentioned already in documents dating back to 1580, as "Lounden Peppen, grown by Mr. PACE of Brentmarch." Also see the Handbuch.

SHAPE: as illustrated, always with low ribs, which are highest around the eye.

SIZE: third grade.

EYE: half closed, on small apples also closed, sepals long, somewhat woolly, brownish grey, shallow basin.

STALK: medium length, woody, in a regular cavity, which will always have some green and shows some raylike russeting.

The COLOUR of some fruits at the sun side are flushed with a sad crimson, in which one sees dark, bloodcoloured flames; russeting is rare, lenticels, especially around the basin, are greyish white.

The FLESH is fine, medium firm, rather crispy, very juicy, sweetish sour.

TIME OF USE: February - April. First or second grade for dessert, first grade for the kitchen.

The TREE is a moderate grower, fertile, suitable as standard tree and pyramid; on the tree the apple seems unattractive, therefore this variety could be used along roads, with a smaller risk of the apples being stolen.
