The origin of this old, excellent apple is unknown; the name Wijker Pippeling probably has been derived from the estate "Hofwijck", near Voorburg (Zuid-Holland), the house of the poet CONSTANTIJN HUYGENS (died 1686); the city of Voorburg also has a bridge called "Wijkerbrug" etc..

SHAPE: very regular, sometimes more flat.

SIZE: third grade.

EYE: open, sepals stay green for a long time; beautiful basin, regular, medium depth.

STALK: mostly short and thick, fleshy; beautiful cavity with a thin, cinnamon-coloured russeting.

The COLOUR is as illustrated; many apples have occasional russeting.

The FLESH is a bit more yellow as illustrated; fine structure, soft, juicy, winy, mixed with a pleasant sweetness.

TIME OF USE: December - February. First grade for dessert.

The TREE is moderate grower, suitable for all shapes. This excellent variety is renowned throughout Europe, sothat further recommendation is superfluous.
